What a smart ring really costs to own

The ring is one-time. The membership isn't.

A smart ring's sticker price is where its cost starts, not where it ends. One major brand charges a fee for as long as you want to see what its ring measures; the rest don't. Who charges what

Oura is the one major ring brand that requires a plan. Its membership costs $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year in the US, which comes to $209.97 over three years on the annual plan and $349.95 over five. Without it, Oura says you'll see only three daily scores, ring battery, basic profile, app settings and Explore content. There's no lifetime plan for new buyers. Everyone else charges nothing to see your data. RingConn sells no paid tier for Gen 3, Gen 2 or Gen 2 Air. Samsung charges nothing for the Galaxy Ring, as we explain in Galaxy Ring subscription. What “no subscription” can still hide

No fee doesn't always mean no cost. Three things to watch:

• Phone lock-in. The Galaxy Ring doesn't work with iPhone, and some of its features need a Samsung Galaxy phone. A no-fee ring that needs a new phone isn't a no-cost ring.
• Optional extras. Ultrahuman sells PowerPlugs and UltrahumanX coverage; Circular plans paid Coins for some future features. They're optional, but check whether the feature you want is one of them.
• What's not in the box. Oura rings and RingConn's Gen 2 Air ship without a charging case; RingConn Gen 2 and Gen 3, the Galaxy Ring and Ultrahuman's Ring PRO include one.

HSA/FSA, privacy and warranty are ownership costs too

Three more lines belong in the math. Pre-tax money can lower what you pay: every major brand labels its ring HSA/FSA eligible, but the IRS excludes items that are merely beneficial to general health, so read smart ring HSA/FSA eligibility before you count on it. Is a smart ring worth it at all?

A fair question before any of the above. A ring tracks sleep, resting heart rate and HRV without a watch on your wrist, and the published evidence behind that varies a lot by brand. If you're still deciding whether you need one, are smart rings worth it weighs the case plainly.
