Galaxy Ring subscription: no fee, but the phone matters

Is the Galaxy Ring subscription based? No

There's no monthly or yearly fee to use the Samsung Galaxy Ring. Its US Amazon listing is titled, in part, “No App Subscription” ( Amazon listing), and Samsung's own US page lists no subscription or paid Samsung Health tier for the ring (Samsung US, checked September 19, 2026). You buy the ring once and use Samsung Health for free. Samsung launched it on July 10, 2024, and it's still the only Galaxy Ring on Samsung's US page.

That makes it one of the no-fee rings in our cost and subscriptions hub, next to RingConn and Ultrahuman. But “no subscription” comes in flavors, as we explain in do smart rings require a subscription, and Samsung's flavor is a phone requirement.

The real cost is the phone

Samsung's Canadian buy page, which spells out compatibility more fully than the US page, says the ring “is supported on Samsung Galaxy smartphones over R OS version (Android 11.0)” and on “Android smartphones from other brands over R OS version (Android 11.0),” and that “some features, such as Double Pinch and Find My Ring does not work on Android smartphones of other brands” ( Samsung Canada). There's no iPhone support at all. Samsung's US page adds that Energy Score insights “require compatible Samsung Galaxy AI phone, Samsung Health app and Samsung account,” and that “select Galaxy AI features require compatible Samsung Galaxy phone.”

So the honest version of “the Galaxy Ring is free to use” is: free on a Samsung Galaxy phone, mostly free on another Android phone, and unusable on an iPhone. If you'd have to switch phones to get the whole ring, that switch is the ring's real running cost. We can't price that for you, and we won't pretend it's small. What you sign up for instead

No fee doesn't mean no strings. Energy Score insights need the Samsung Health app and a Samsung account on a compatible Galaxy phone, by Samsung's own wording. That's an ecosystem commitment rather than a bill: your ring data lives in Samsung Health, under Samsung's account terms. Ownership costs a fee table won't show

• Battery. Samsung claims up to 7 days per charge for sizes 12 and 13 and up to 6 days for smaller sizes, and up to 14 days in total with the charging case. GSMArena got about 5 days from a size 11 (GSMArena). The case is in the box, which saves you buying one. Our smart ring battery life guide puts that next to every other ring.
• Sizing. Sizes 5 through 15, with sizes 14 and 15 added in January 2025 (Samsung Newsroom). Samsung says its sizes are “slightly different from that of regular rings” and offers a complimentary sizing kit. One wrinkle: part of Samsung's US page still describes a kit with 9 sizes from 5 to 13, so if you need a 14 or 15, confirm the kit covers it.
• Warranty and battery. The US version carries a one-year manufacturer warranty, per its Amazon listing title. We found no Samsung battery replacement policy for the ring on the pages we checked. In January 2026, Android Police reported Samsung's findings on one swollen Galaxy Ring: Samsung attributed it to a crack in the ring's internal molding and said there was “no wider product battery safety risk” ( Android Police). • HSA/FSA. Samsung's US page says the ring qualifies for HSA and FSA spending. The IRS excludes items “merely beneficial to general health,” so check with your plan first; our HSA/FSA guide explains how that works.
• Patent risk. Oura's second ITC action, which the ITC began investigating in December 2025, names Samsung among the respondents (Oura). We found no exclusion order against the Galaxy Ring, and it was listed on Amazon.com when we checked.

The sleep apnea feature: announced, not live

In July 2026, Samsung said at Galaxy Unpacked that “Galaxy Ring will be the first and only FDA-cleared over-the-counter ring device for sleep apnea risk detection,” with the feature due in the fall (Android Authority; Gizmodo). We couldn't find it on Samsung's US ring page when we checked, so treat it as coming, not live. We also haven't seen Samsung confirm which phones it will need; given how Samsung handles Energy Score, check before assuming it will run on a non-Samsung phone.

The evidence gap

Here's the Galaxy Ring's biggest weakness, and it has nothing to do with fees: we found no peer-reviewed validation study of it. Oura's rings have been compared with a Polar H10 chest strap in a peer-reviewed study (Dial et al., 2025), and RingConn Gen 2 has a preprint against the same strap. The Galaxy Ring has neither yet. That doesn't mean it's inaccurate. It means nobody has published the check. Who should buy it, and who should skip it

Buy the Galaxy Ring if:

• You carry a Samsung Galaxy phone and plan to keep carrying one.
• You want a charging case in the box and sizes up to 15.
• You refuse a monthly fee and are happy inside Samsung Health.

Skip it if:

• You use an iPhone. It won't pair.
• You use another Android brand and want every feature. Energy Score, gestures and Find My Ring won't work.
• You want published accuracy evidence for the exact ring you buy.
