Mike M. is the hands-on owner behind Iron Mako Media, the independent publisher of Ring & Rest. He built this site for people who want recovery and sleep data without a watch and without a monthly fee. Every fee, spec and study on the site is linked to its source so you can check the math yourself.
Why Ring & Rest
The smart ring market has an unusual habit: sell the hardware, then rent back the features. Some brands charge a monthly membership for insights the ring already collects; others charge nothing. Battery figures come with conditions in the small print, sizes don't match between brands, and accuracy claims are hard to check. Ring & Rest exists to put all of that in one place for the buyer who wants to own the ring and the data, with the fee, the study and the source on the page.
How the picks are made
Iron Mako Media's standard is “Tested when we can. Researched when we can't. Labeled either way.” On Ring & Rest, every pick is labeled Researched. That means it was chosen and scored from the brand's published fee policy, spec sheet, sizing and warranty terms, and the published studies that compared the ring (or its predecessor) with an ECG, a chest strap or a sleep lab. The rubric and its weights are on the methodology page.
No page on this site claims that Mike has worn, owned or tested a ring it covers. When a page reports how a ring behaved on someone's finger, it names the reviewer who reported it. If that changes for a specific model, the page will say exactly what was done and for how long, and that pick's label will change to Hands-on. Until then, Researched is the honest label.
What he covers
- Best Smart Rings: Ranked short lists: no-subscription rings, rings for iPhone and Android, sleep, lifting, budgets and gifts.
- Smart Ring Reviews: One ring per page: cost to own, subscription terms, published evidence, battery and sizing.
- Ring vs Ring: Oura vs RingConn, Galaxy Ring, Ultrahuman and Whoop, plus the full comparison chart.
- Cost & Subscriptions: Fee policies, three- and five-year cost math, HSA/FSA, privacy, warranty and whether a ring is worth it.
- Accuracy vs a Chest Strap: Heart rate, HRV, sleep and temperature evidence, and a do-it-yourself chest-strap test.
- Battery & Sizing Truth: Battery claims and lifespan, charging cases, sizing kits, which finger, water resistance.
If you read one page, make it the best smart rings without a subscription.
What you won't find here
- Credentials, job titles or claims about tenure that haven't been shown to you.
- Claims of wearing, owning or lab-testing rings.
- Fees or specs stated from memory. Each one links to the brand's own page, with the date it was checked.
- Rankings paid for by a brand. Commissions never set a score or pick a winner.
- Medical advice. Rings are wellness devices, and health pages say so.
