Galaxy Ring vs Oura Ring: no fee against the best evidence

The verdict

On our rubric the Galaxy Ring scores 6.2 and the Ring 5 scores 5.8, which is close. They win in opposite places. The Galaxy Ring takes cost of ownership (no fee) and loses phone support badly, since it shuts out iPhone and holds features back on other Android brands. Oura takes evidence and phone support and loses cost. So “is the Galaxy Ring better than Oura?” has a one-line answer: it depends on the phone in your pocket, then on whether you'll pay a fee. Your phone decides first

No ring comparison depends more on your phone than this one. Samsung says the Galaxy Ring is supported on Samsung Galaxy phones and on other brands' Android phones running Android 11 or newer (Samsung). It doesn't work with iPhone at all.

On a non-Samsung Android phone it works, but with less. Samsung says Double Pinch and Find My Ring don't work on other brands' phones. Energy Score insights need a “compatible Samsung Galaxy AI phone, Samsung Health app and Samsung account,” and Android Police listed Galaxy AI health recommendations among the features missing on other phones. Oura is simpler: the Ring 5 is “Available on iOS and Android,” and the membership works the same on either. So the rule of thumb is short. On an iPhone, it's Oura or a no-fee alternative like RingConn, never Galaxy. On a Samsung phone, the Galaxy Ring gets its whole feature set and no fee. The decisive differences

Both rings are titanium, both are rated for serious water (Oura to 100 meters and IP68; Samsung 10ATM, which it defines as up to 100 meters for up to 10 minutes, plus IP68), both brands say the ring qualifies for HSA/FSA funds, and both carry a one-year US warranty. Both are listed on Amazon.com. If you're weighing the older Oura Ring 4 instead, its sizes run 4-15, close to the Galaxy Ring's 5-15; it claims 5-8 days per charge and carries the same membership. The three-year math

Hardware prices change daily, so the table links to the live price rather than printing one. The fee columns are each brand's published plan, multiplied out.

Samsung's “fee” is a phone. What it asks instead of a subscription is that you own the right handset for the full feature set. If you already carry a Galaxy phone, the Galaxy Ring's three-year cost is simply the ring. If you don't, that hidden cost is features you'll never see. Oura's cost is plainer: without the membership, Oura says you see only your three daily scores (Readiness, Activity and Sleep), battery, basic profile, settings and Explore content. Accuracy evidence

This is Oura's strongest ground and the Galaxy Ring's weakest. The Galaxy Ring launched on July 10, 2024, and when we searched the research literature on September 19, 2026 we found no peer-reviewed validation study of it, and no published comparison against a chest strap or ECG that we could verify.

Oura's sleep record is deeper too: a 2025 meta-analysis of six studies and 388 participants (Khan et al.) found no statistically significant differences between Oura and polysomnography or actigraphy for total sleep time, sleep efficiency or time in each sleep stage. For the Ring 5 itself, DC Rainmaker saw “no meaningful difference between Oura and other wearables for core sleep stats” and found workout heart rate “largely pretty good” on rides and road runs, though it “basically falls apart” on a trail descent.

Sleep apnea: announced, not live

Samsung is promising something Oura isn't. At Galaxy Unpacked in July 2026, Samsung said, as quoted by Android Authority, that “Galaxy Ring will be the first and only FDA-cleared over-the-counter ring device for sleep apnea risk detection,” with the feature due this fall (Android Authority). Gizmodo reported it arriving “later this fall.” We couldn't find it on Samsung's US Galaxy Ring page when we checked, so treat it as coming, not live. Until it arrives, you can't use sleep apnea screening on the ring.

Oura says the Ring 5 uses nighttime blood oxygen to tell “if you're experiencing any breathing disturbances,” but no Oura feature is FDA-cleared; MedTech Dive reported Oura is pursuing clearance for a blood pressure feature. Even a cleared feature is a risk screen, not a diagnosis. A 2026 meta-analysis of finger-worn devices (Jin et al.) found rings useful for tracking trends and as a triage tool for severe sleep apnea, not for diagnosing it. Battery, sizing and warranty

Battery. Oura claims 6-9 days for the Ring 5, “depending on ring size and usage,” and DC Rainmaker got 6-7. Samsung claims up to 7 days for sizes 12 and 13 and up to 6 days for smaller sizes; GSMArena got about 5 days from a size 11. So on the ring alone, Oura claims more. The Galaxy Ring's advantage is its charging case, which Samsung says brings the total to up to 14 days; Oura doesn't include a case. Both brands have had battery headlines: Samsung blamed a crack in the ring's internal molding for one swelling case and said there was “no wider product battery safety risk” (via Android Police), and Android Authority reported that Oura's pre-IPO filing showed higher warranty expenses in fiscal 2025 tied to Ring 4 battery problems, which the article didn't describe as swelling. Sizing. The Galaxy Ring comes in US sizes 5-15; Samsung added 14 and 15 in January 2025. Samsung says its sizes are “slightly different from that of regular rings” and offers a complimentary sizing kit. One wrinkle: part of Samsung's US page still says the sample rings “come in 9 sizes, from 5 to 13,” so if you're a 14 or 15, confirm your kit includes them. The Ring 5 comes in 6-13, and Oura says its sizing differs from standard sizes and between its own generations. No brand says its sizes match another's, so a Galaxy size is not an Oura size. Warranty. Oura's US warranty is one year with batteries excluded as consumables. The Galaxy Ring's Amazon listing says “1Yr Manufacturer Warranty” for the US version; we didn't find a Samsung battery replacement policy for the ring.

Patents and availability

Both rings are listed on Amazon.com. For context only: Samsung is a respondent in Oura's second patent action at the International Trade Commission (investigation 337-TA-1468, begun in December 2025), alongside Zepp Health (Amazfit), Reebok and Nexxbase, the maker of the Luna ring (Oura). Zepp has since settled and been dropped from the case, and Nexxbase agreed to stay out of the US market. We found no exclusion order against the Galaxy Ring, and it's on sale as normal. It isn't a reason to avoid buying one today. Samsung's US site lists only the original Galaxy Ring; we found nothing official on a successor.
