The verdict
A ring and a watch do different jobs
A smartwatch is built around its screen. It tells you the time, shows notifications, runs apps and, on most models, tracks workouts on your wrist. A smart ring is built around its sensors. It sits on your finger, collects heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), temperature trends and movement, and sends it all to an app on your phone. You look at the phone, not the ring.
That makes a ring better at one job, collecting data quietly while you sleep, and worse at everything that needs a display. It also means the “ring vs watch” question is really two questions: do you need a screen on your body, and which device will you actually wear at night?
There's a third question for anyone who reads this site: what does it cost to keep using? Among rings, that answer varies more than people expect. Oura charges a membership of $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year for most of its insights. RingConn and Samsung charge nothing. The best smart rings without a subscription covers every no-fee option.
The trade-offs, one by one
We haven't researched individual smartwatch models for this site, so where we talk about watches below, we keep it general and tell you what to check. Every ring figure comes from the brand's own page or a named reviewer.
Screen and notifications
No ring we cover has a display. Some can nudge you: RingConn lists “Smart Vibration Alerts” on the Gen 3, and The Gadgeteer's reviewer got about 10 days per charge with alerts switched on, against RingConn's claim of up to 14. But you can't read a message on a ring. If glancing at your wrist is how you run your day, that's a watch job, full stop.
Workouts and GPS
None of the rings in our product registry lists built-in GPS among its published specs, so pace, distance and route come from your phone. Heart rate during exercise is also where reviewers find rings weakest. DC Rainmaker found Oura Ring 5's workout heart rate against a Polar H10 chest strap “largely pretty good” for indoor cycling and road running, but on a trail descent “the HR accuracy basically falls apart for the entire rest of the run.” Gadgets & Wearables found the RingConn Gen 2 read higher than a chest strap on runs. Tech Advisor's Circular Ring 2 reviewer went further: “I've not tested a smart ring that I really think does a good job of tracking heart rate during exercise.”
If training data matters to you, the bigger upgrade is a chest strap. The Polar H10 was the reference device in the ring-and-watch study below, and it connects over Bluetooth and ANT+. Our best chest strap for HRV compares the options.
Battery
Rings don't power a screen, and their makers claim roughly a week or more per charge. Oura claims 6-9 days for Ring 5 “depending on ring size and usage” (DC Rainmaker got 6-7). RingConn claims 10-12 days for Gen 2, and up to 150 days with its included charging case. Samsung claims up to 7 days for Galaxy Ring sizes 12-13, up to 6 for smaller sizes, and up to 14 with its case; GSMArena got about 5 from a size 11. Whatever watch you're weighing, put its own rated battery life next to those numbers. Our smart ring battery life guide reads each claim with its fine print.
Sleep comfort
The case for a ring is really the case for wearing something to bed. Oura says Ring 5 weighs “from 2 grams” depending on size. That only helps if the ring fits: one that's too loose reads worse and one that's too tight is miserable at night, and every ring brand tells you to use its own sizer. Oura recommends the index finger for the best accuracy. Start with our smart ring sizing guide.
Water and the gym
All three rings on this page carry serious water ratings: Oura Ring 5 is waterproof to 100 m and IP68, RingConn Gen 2 is IP68 to 100 m, and Galaxy Ring is 10ATM and IP68. The gym is different. A ring sits exactly where a barbell does, so if you lift, read our guide to the best smart ring for weightlifting before you buy.
Phones
A ring is only as useful as the app on your phone. The Galaxy Ring supports Android 11 and newer only, with no iPhone support, and Samsung says Double Pinch and Find My Ring don't work on other brands' Android phones. RingConn Gen 2 needs iOS 17 or Android 10 or newer. Oura supports iOS and Android.
Smart ring vs smartwatch accuracy
The one study we found that measured rings and watches against the same reference is Dial et al., published in Physiological Reports in 2025. It compared Oura Gen 3 and Gen 4 rings, two watches (a Garmin Fenix 6 and a Polar Grit X Pro) and a WHOOP 4.0 band against a Polar H10 chest strap, across 536 nights in 13 adults. The Oura rings had the highest agreement of the devices tested: for Oura Gen 4, resting heart rate error was 1.94% and HRV error 5.96% (Dial et al.).
For sleep staging, the relevant study is Robbins et al. (Sensors, 2024), which compared an Oura Gen3, a Fitbit Sense 2 and an Apple Watch Series 8 against in-lab polysomnography in 35 adults. Oura's stage sensitivity was 76.0-79.5%, and the authors found it “was not different from PSG” for wake, light, deep or REM sleep. Two caveats: the study was funded by Oura Ring Inc., and its lead author sits on Oura's Medical Advisory Board. We quote Oura's results only, because those are the figures in our verified notes; the paper has the rest.
Put together, the evidence says this: at night, at rest, the best-studied ring holds up very well against a chest strap, and against two older watches. During exercise, reviewers keep finding rings less reliable, so don't buy one for workout heart rate. Our guides to smart ring heart rate accuracy and sleep tracking accuracy go study by study.
Smart ring vs Apple Watch
A lot of people searching this are iPhone owners weighing a ring against an Apple Watch, or wondering whether a ring adds anything to the watch they already have. We haven't researched Apple Watch specs or pricing for this site, so we won't put numbers on the watch side. Here's what we can tell you with a source:
- iPhone compatibility is the first filter. The Galaxy Ring doesn't work with iPhone at all. RingConn Gen 2 needs iOS 17 or newer, and Oura supports iOS. Our best smart ring for iPhone ranks the options.
- The only study in our notes that included an Apple Watch is the Oura-funded Robbins et al. sleep study above.
- A ring and a watch don't compete for the same spot. If you like your watch by day but don't want it on your wrist at night, a ring is a way to track sleep without wearing the watch to bed.
- Mind the fee. Adding an Oura means adding its membership on top of whatever you already pay for. Adding a RingConn means adding nothing after the ring.
What the ring side costs to own
Watch pricing and any watch-side fees are outside what we've researched, so check the maker's own terms. On the ring side, the fee math is simple. The Oura membership adds $209.97 over three years on the annual plan, or $215.64 month to month. RingConn and Samsung add nothing.
| Ring | Required plan | Fees, 1 yr | Fees, 3 yrs | Fees, 5 yrs | Ring price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oura Ring 5 | $5.99/month or $69.99/year | $69.99 | $209.97 | $349.95 | Check on Amazon |
| RingConn Gen 2 | No subscription | $0 | $0 | $0 | Check on Amazon |
| Samsung Galaxy Ring | No subscription | $0 | $0 | $0 | Check on Amazon |
The full brand-by-brand picture is in what a smart ring really costs over three years, and are smart rings worth it weighs the value question directly.
The rings side by side
If you've decided a ring fits your life better than a watch, these are the three we'd look at first. The score is from our ring rubric, which weights cost of ownership and published evidence most heavily (see our methodology).

Health features: claims and limits
Some rings now list health features people associate with watches. Read each one for what it is:
- ECG and AFib. Circular lists single-lead ECG and AFib detection for the Circular Ring 2 and says “Circular is not a diagnostic device and does not replace medical advice.”
- Sleep apnea. Samsung has announced that an FDA-cleared sleep apnea risk feature is coming to the Galaxy Ring in fall 2026, according to press reports (Android Authority). Until it arrives, it isn't live. RingConn's “90.7% Sleep Apnea Monitoring Accuracy” for Gen 2 is RingConn's own claim. See smart rings and sleep apnea.
- Blood pressure. No Oura ring feature is FDA-cleared; Oura is pursuing clearance for a blood pressure feature. We found no smart ring with an FDA-cleared blood pressure feature. More in can a smart ring measure blood pressure?
- Blood glucose. The FDA's February 2024 safety communication applies to both devices: “The FDA has not authorized, cleared, or approved any smartwatch or smart ring that is intended to measure or estimate blood glucose values on its own” ( FDA).
Who should pick which
- A watch if you want notifications, a screen and workout tracking on your wrist, and you're fine with whatever charging routine your watch needs.
- A ring if you want sleep and recovery data without anything on your wrist, and you'll check the numbers on your phone in the morning.
- RingConn Gen 2 if the ring wins and you refuse a fee. See our RingConn Gen 2 review.
- Oura Ring 5 if you want the brand with the most published evidence and accept the membership. See our Oura Ring 5 review.
- Samsung Galaxy Ring if you use a Samsung Galaxy phone. See our Galaxy Ring review.

How we scored this
Rings we claim to have lab-tested: 0
Plenty of ring reviews say they wore everything they rank. We haven't, and we say so. Every pick here is labeled Researched: we read each brand's fee policy, spec sheet, sizing and warranty pages, and the published studies that tested the ring (or its predecessor) against a chest strap, an ECG or a sleep lab, then scored it on a public rubric. Every figure links to where it came from, and maker performance numbers are labeled “maker's claim.”
Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not test results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.
