Battery and sizing: the fine print

Battery days are the maker's claim, sizes don't match your jewelry size, and no two brands size alike. Here's what the spec sheets say, what they leave out, and how not to buy the wrong ring.

See every pick and the math

Battery and sizing are where smart ring spec sheets are least honest, and where a wrong call costs you most. A battery claim is a best case under the maker's own conditions. A ring size is whatever that brand says it is. Neither problem is fixed by a subscription, and both are cheap to get right before you buy. These guides read the fine print so you know what you're getting.

Battery days are claims with conditions

Makers quote 5 to 15 days per charge, and each number comes with a condition attached. Oura rates Ring 5 at 6-9 days “depending on ring size and usage.” Samsung saves its 7-day Galaxy Ring figure for sizes 12 and 13. RingConn's Gen 3 numbers drop with vibration alerts on. The reviewers who published a figure, from DC Rainmaker on Oura Ring 5 to GSMArena on the Galaxy Ring, landed at the low end of each claim or below it. Our smart ring battery life guide lays every claim next to its fine print. Budget for the low end.

A charging case changes the math

Days per charge matter less if the ring ships with a case. RingConn rates Gen 2's included case at up to 150 days total and Gen 3's at 150+. Ultrahuman's Ring PRO case claims 45 days, and the Galaxy Ring's 14. Oura includes no case, so Oura owners are the ones shopping for one. Our chargers and charging cases roundup ranks the rings that include a case and covers what to check before you buy a third-party one.

Batteries age, and you can't swap them

Every smart ring battery is sealed in. Oura calls its battery non-replaceable, RingConn says its batteries “are not designed for user replacement,” and the only lifespan figure we found is Ultrahuman's: a gradual reduction after 1 to 2 years on its Ring AIR. Standard warranties mostly exclude normal battery wear. That's all in smart ring battery lifespan and replacement, and the brand-by-brand warranty terms are in our warranty and returns guide. If a battery ever looks damaged or a ring suddenly feels tight, stop wearing and charging it and read what to do about smart ring battery swelling.

Size with the brand's own kit

Your jewelry size is the wrong starting point. Oura says its whole sizes “differ slightly from standard US ring sizes” and differ between its own generations. RingConn says Gen 3 sizes differ from its other rings, standard rings and other brands. Samsung, Ultrahuman and Circular each say their sizing is their own. Every brand offers a sizer, most of them free. Our smart ring sizing guide walks through it step by step, and which finger to wear a smart ring on covers the finger choice, which you need to make before you size.

Sizes by brand

Ranges differ more than most buyers expect. Oura Ring 4 runs 4-15 but Ring 5 only 6-13. The Galaxy Ring covers 5-15, RingConn Gen 3 6-15, Ultrahuman Ring PRO 5-14, and RingConn Gen 2, Gen 2 Air and Circular Ring 2 6-14, with Circular running about half a size large. No brand says its sizes match another's, so “is RingConn sizing the same as Oura?” has no official answer; see smart ring sizing compared. If you wear a very small or very large size, start with smart rings in large and small sizes.

Water and heat

Every ring we cover carries a 100-meter rating, an IP68 rating or both, but the fine print differs. Samsung rates the Galaxy Ring to 100 meters for up to 10 minutes. Oura calls Ring 4 “suitable for sauna and water sports but not diving,” while its safety page warns that extended exposure above 140°F or below -4°F may damage the battery. Our guide to whether a smart ring is waterproof goes through showers, pools and saunas ring by ring.

Once battery and size are settled, the rest of the decision is cost and evidence. Start with the best smart rings without a subscription, check the three-year fee math in our no-subscription hub, read each model in depth in our research reviews, or weigh two rings head to head in our ring-vs-ring comparisons. How well any of them measures is covered on the accuracy hub.

Questions

Battery & Sizing: common questions

How long do smart ring batteries last?

Do smart rings come with a charging case?
Some do. RingConn Gen 2 and Gen 3, Ultrahuman Ring PRO and Samsung Galaxy Ring include one. Oura Ring 5 and Ring 4 don't, and RingConn doesn't list one for Gen 2 Air. Our charging cases roundup ranks them.
Are smart ring sizes the same as regular ring sizes?
No. Oura, RingConn, Samsung and Circular all say their sizes differ from standard ring sizes, and no brand says its sizes match another's. Size with the kit from the brand you're buying; our sizing guide shows how.
Can you wear a smart ring in the shower or a sauna?
Every ring we cover is rated IP68, to 100 meters or both, and Oura calls Ring 4 “suitable for sauna.” But Oura also warns that extended exposure above 140°F may damage the battery. Details for every ring are in is a smart ring waterproof.
