Smart rings and airport security: what you actually need to do

A smart ring is a lithium battery and a radio wrapped in titanium, which sounds like a conversation with a screening officer waiting to happen. In practice it is one of the least troublesome things in your bag - but there are two rules worth knowing before you fly, and they are about the charger, not the ring.

The ring itself

The TSA publishes a one-line ruling for jewelry: carry-on yes, checked bags yes. The accompanying advice is to keep valuable items such as jewelry with you at all times rather than putting them in checked baggage, and the page adds that you can ask an officer to screen you and your valuables in private if you prefer. The standing caveat on every TSA item page applies here too - the final decision on whether anything comes through a checkpoint rests with the officer in front of you.

So there is no rule requiring you to remove a smart ring, and in ordinary practice people walk through wearing them. If a screening officer asks you to take it off, take it off; that is their call to make and it is not a reflection on the device. Nothing in airport screening is going to damage a ring - the data on it is stored in flash memory, not on anything magnetically sensitive.

The charger is the real rule

This is the part worth getting right. A charging case is a power bank: it contains its own lithium cell to refill the ring away from a wall socket. The FAA's PackSafe guidance is that devices with installed lithium batteries may travel in carry-on or checked baggage, but spare lithium batteries and power banks must be in carry-on only.

In practice that means the ring can go either way (and should be on your finger anyway), and the case goes in the bag that stays with you. Airlines apply their own additional rules on top of the FAA baseline - several have tightened power bank policies - so check your carrier before a long-haul flight if you are carrying a large case. Which rings ship with a case, and which cases exist for the rings that do not, is on chargers and charging cases.

Why it should never go in the hold

Two separate reasons point the same way. The TSA's own advice on valuables is to keep them with you. And the battery guidance puts spare cells in the cabin, where a problem is noticed and dealt with rather than happening unattended in a cargo hold. A smart ring and its case are small enough that there is no reason to do anything else.

Wearing it in the air

A smart ring communicates over Bluetooth Low Energy and nothing else - no cellular, no Wi-Fi. Bluetooth is permitted in flight on essentially every airline once airborne, and the ring will keep recording regardless of whether your phone is in airplane mode: it buffers readings on board and syncs when the app next connects. Ultrahuman publishes the most generous storage figure in the category at up to 250 days on the ring, with up to a year on the PRO Charger.

One practical note for long flights: fingers swell at altitude and after hours of sitting. A ring that is snug on the ground can be tight at 35,000 feet. If it starts to feel uncomfortable, take it off and put it somewhere it cannot roll away - and size it for the swollen end of the day in the first place, which is the whole argument of how tight a smart ring should be.

What to look for in a travel ring

  1. A charging case in the box, so a week away needs no socket and no cable.
  2. Multi-day battery, ideally enough that a short trip needs no charging at all.
  3. Generous on-ring storage, so days without your phone do not vanish.
  4. No subscription, because the last thing a trip needs is a billing problem in a different time zone.

The data is better than the photos

Travel is the one situation where a ring earns its keep in a visible way. A long eastward flight shows up in the data as a shifted sleep window, a higher resting heart rate and a suppressed HRV for several days, and watching those recover is genuinely useful for deciding whether to train or to sleep. That is a trend reading, not a diagnosis - the general argument for reading the week rather than the night is on best smart ring for recovery.

If your sleep is broken for the whole trip rather than the first two nights, that is worth noticing rather than explaining away. What ring sleep data can and cannot tell you is on sleep tracking accuracy.

Mistakes people make

  • Putting the charging case in checked luggage. Spare lithium batteries and power banks are carry-on only under FAA guidance.
  • Packing the ring instead of wearing it. The TSA's own advice on valuables is to keep them with you - and a ring in a bag records nothing.
  • Arguing with a screening officer. The published rules allow jewelry through; the final call is still theirs.
  • Travelling with a ring sized for a cold morning. Fingers swell on long flights.
  • Leaving on a trip with 20% battery. Charge before you go - it takes about 90 minutes on the brands that publish a figure, per smart ring charging time.

How we scored this

How these picks were chosen

Every pick here is labeled Researched: chosen from each brand's fee policy, spec sheet, sizing and warranty pages, and the published studies that measured the ring (or its predecessor) against a chest strap, an ECG or a sleep lab, then scored on a public rubric. Every figure links to where it came from, and maker performance numbers are labeled “maker's claim,” so you can see exactly what you're paying for before you buy.

Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

Questions

Frequently asked

Do you have to take off a smart ring at airport security?
No rule requires it. The TSA lists jewelry as permitted in both carry-on and checked bags, and most people walk through wearing a ring. The final decision at any checkpoint rests with the officer.
Can you take a smart ring charging case on a plane?
Yes, in your carry-on. A charging case contains a lithium battery, and FAA PackSafe guidance puts spare lithium batteries and power banks in the cabin rather than in checked baggage. Check your airline's own policy too.
Does a smart ring work on a plane?
Yes. It records continuously and buffers the readings until your phone next connects, and it communicates only over Bluetooth Low Energy, which is permitted in flight on essentially every airline.
Will airport scanners damage a smart ring?
There is no reason to expect so: the data is in flash memory and the hardware is an ordinary low-power electronic device. We have not seen any brand publish a warning about airport screening.
