How we review rings we haven't worn

Every review on this page is a research review, and we say so at the top of each one. We haven't worn, owned or lab-tested these rings. What we do instead is read the fine print most reviews skip: each brand's subscription policy, spec sheet, sizing notes, warranty and return terms, and the published studies that tested the ring, or its predecessor, against a chest strap, an ECG or a sleep lab. When a named reviewer did wear the ring, such as DC Rainmaker on the Oura Ring 5 or The Gadgeteer on the RingConn Gen 3, we quote what they found and say who found it.

Every figure links to its source, with the date we checked it. Maker battery and accuracy numbers are labeled as the maker's claim. Scores come from one public rubric, weighted toward what the ownership buyer cares about most: cost of ownership over three years, then published accuracy evidence, battery, sizing, data ownership and phone support. What every review checks

Each review follows the same order, so you can compare two rings without hunting:

1. What you pay over three years. The required fee, multiplied out, next to two alternatives. Hardware prices change daily, so we link to the live price instead of printing one.
2. What's locked without a plan. Quoted from the brand, not paraphrased into something kinder.
3. What the evidence says. Study, year, sample size, reference device and who paid for it. Preprints and company studies are labeled.
4. Battery, sizing and phones. The claim, the conditions, and what reviewers actually got.
5. Who should skip it. Every ring has a reader it doesn't suit, and we name them.
6. The alternatives. Two rings to consider instead, each with a one-line reason.

The lineup at a glance

The eight rings split cleanly on the question this site exists to answer: do you have to keep paying?

Membership required for most features: the Oura Ring 5 and the Oura Ring 4. Oura's membership costs $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year in the US, and without it you see three daily scores. In fairness, Oura also has the strongest published evidence of any brand: its Gen 4 is the ring tested against a Polar H10 in the best study we found.

No subscription at all: the RingConn Gen 2 (our highest score), the RingConn Gen 3, the RingConn Gen 2 Air and the Samsung Galaxy Ring.

No required fee, with optional paid extras: the Ultrahuman Ring PRO (optional PowerPlugs and coverage) and the Circular Ring 2 (future features may cost Circular Coins).

US availability: read this before you fall for a ring

• Ultrahuman Ring PRO is a pre-order from Ultrahuman's US store only, shipping “October 10th onwards” when we checked, after earlier dates slipped. It isn't on Amazon.com. The older Ring AIR isn't sold in the US at all after an import ban; the review explains what happened.
• Circular Ring 2 is sold only on Circular's own store, with 14-day returns.
• Samsung Galaxy Ring works only with Android phones, and several features need a Samsung Galaxy phone. It doesn't work with iPhone.
• RingConn Gen 3 showed “Out of stock” on RingConn's own store when we checked, though it was listed on Amazon.
• Oura Ring 4 is no longer on Oura's ring store list since Ring 5 launched, but it's still listed on Amazon.

The Amazfit Helio Ring isn't reviewed here because we couldn't confirm it's still sold in the US.

How to read the scores

A score is a summary, not a verdict on whether a ring suits you. The Galaxy Ring scores 6.2 overall, but for a Samsung phone owner its weakest category, phone support, doesn't apply. The Oura rings score lowest on our rubric almost entirely because of the fee; if you've decided to pay it, their evidence scores are the numbers to look at. Every review shows the per-metric breakdown on the ring's card, so you can re-weight it for your own priorities.
