The best gifts for smart ring owners and Oura ring users

What a smart ring owner actually wants

They already bought the tracker, so a second tracker is the wrong gift. The gifts that land fill the gaps the ring leaves, and most rings leave the same few:

• A way to check the numbers. A ring gives a daily read on resting heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV), and the published evidence behind those numbers varies a lot by brand. A chest strap is the practical reference they can use at home.
• Heart rate during workouts. Reviewers who compared rings with chest straps during exercise found them less reliable once the wearer moves: DC Rainmaker saw Oura Ring 5's heart rate “basically falls apart” on a trail descent, and Gadgets & Wearables found RingConn Gen 2 read high on runs.
• A way to charge away from home. Oura ships no charging case. RingConn Gen 2 and Gen 3, the Samsung Galaxy Ring and the Ultrahuman Ring PRO do.
• Protection at the gym. A titanium ring under a knurled bar picks up marks; a silicone cover sits between the two.

A chest strap covers the first two gaps at once, which is why it tops our list. The case and cover are excellent gifts for the right person and wasted on the wrong one, so the next section is about finding out which person you're buying for.

Four things to find out first

You can learn most of this from the ring's box, an order email or one casual question:

1. Which ring, and which generation. “An Oura” isn't enough. Oura says its sizing “differs slightly between generations,” and Ring 5's “redesigned interior fits differently than Oura Ring 4.” Third-party covers and cases are sold by generation for the same reason.
2. Their ring size. Only matters for a cover or a case, but it matters a lot: several third-party case listings say they're size-specific, and a wrong-size cover slips or pinches.
3. Whether their ring came with a case. If it did, skip the case. The table below shows which rings include one.
4. Roughly their chest size, for a strap. Polar H10 listings on Amazon come in M-XXL and XS-S straps, and Garmin sells the HRM 600 in XS-S and M-XL.

If they own an Oura Ring 5, Ring 4 or a RingConn Gen 2 Air, a charging case is a real upgrade. If they own a RingConn Gen 2 or Gen 3, a Galaxy Ring or an Ultrahuman Ring PRO, they already have one.

Why a chest strap is the best gift for a ring owner

When researchers want to know how accurate a ring is, they compare it with something more trusted. In the strongest ring study we found, Dial et al. (Physiological Reports, 2025), that reference was a Polar H10: “The Polar H10 was used as the criterion measurement” (Dial et al.). The study compared Oura Gen 3 and Gen 4 with other wearables across 536 nights in 13 adults, and the Oura rings agreed most closely with the strap.

That's the gift: the same kind of reference, on their own chest. The strap also covers what rings do worst. Reviewers found ring heart rate unreliable during hard or irregular exercise, and a chest strap is the usual fix: wear the strap to train and the ring to bed. One honest limitation: a chest strap is less comfortable to sleep in than a ring, so it's a checking and training tool, not a replacement for the ring they chose.

Charging cases and covers: good gifts, easy to get wrong

A charging case is the thoughtful gift for a RingConn owner, and it is the one case you can buy on its own from the ring brand itself: RingConn publishes “150+ Days extra battery life”, a 90-minute full recharge and a Type-C cable in the box, and it says the case “works with all RingConn sizes”, so there is no size to guess. An Oura owner is the harder case, because Oura ships none with Ring 5 or Ring 4 and sells none separately: the portable cases labeled for Oura rings are unbranded listings, often size-specific, and several say the official charger isn't included, so check the generation, the size and whether their own Oura charger has to go inside it. A silicone ring protector is the gift for a ring owner who lifts. It sits between the ring and a barbell, kettlebell or pull-up bar. RingConn makes its own, 0.5 mm thick and 0.8 g, in medical-grade silicone and published size bands (S for 6-8, M for 9-11, L for 12-14), with a touch marker so the sensor stays aligned. Gifts to skip

• A surprise membership. Oura's membership is $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year in the US, and your Oura owner may already pay it. We couldn't confirm that Oura sells a membership on its own as a gift; its HSA/FSA support page only mentions a prepaid membership bought together with a new ring. Ask before you plan on it. • A surprise upgrade ring. Sizes differ between brands and even between Oura generations, so a new ring bought without their input is a sizing gamble. If they're due an upgrade, start with a sizing kit.
• A cover or case that doesn't name their ring. Vague compatibility is the most common way these gifts fail.
• A second sleep tracker. They already have one on their finger.

How we ranked them

We then ordered the list by how likely each gift is to land rather than strictly by score. The Polar H10 comes first because it suits any ring owner with any phone (9.6 on our rubric). RingConn's own Charging Case and Ring Protector score a shade higher still (9.7 each, because an accessory is judged on whether the maker states exactly what it fits, and these do), but they rank second and third because they only suit a RingConn owner. The Garmin and Wahoo straps come last as alternatives to the Polar, each better only in a specific situation.

The picks in context

1. Polar H10

The gift that works for almost any ring owner. It's the reference device in the one peer-reviewed ring-vs-chest-strap study we found, it pairs with phones, watches and gym equipment over Bluetooth and ANT+, and its coin cell is rated at about 400 hours, so it's never another thing to charge. It stores one session of up to 30 hours, so they can train without a phone nearby, and it's rated WR30. The trade-offs: the coin cell needs replacing eventually, and you'll have to pick a strap size.

2. RingConn Charging Case

The one charging case a ring brand sells on its own, which is exactly what makes it a safe gift: no generation to match, no size to guess. RingConn says it works with all RingConn sizes, adds “150+ Days extra battery life”, refills a ring in about 90 minutes from a 500 mAh cell, and ships with a Type-C to C cable. For a Gen 2 Air owner it supplies the case the ring doesn't include; for a Gen 2 or Gen 3 owner it is the spare that lives in a travel bag. It is the most expensive gift on this page, and it is RingConn-only.

3. RingConn Silicone Ring Protector

A small, genuinely useful gift for a RingConn owner who lifts: 0.5 mm of medical-grade hypoallergenic silicone between a knurled bar and the ring, 0.8 g on the finger, with a positioning marker you can feel so the sensor goes back the right way round. It comes in published size bands, and because RingConn makes it, the fit claim is the ring brand's rather than a seller's. Amazon carries the S and L bands; the M band is on RingConn's own store.

4. Garmin HRM 600

The better strap for someone already in Garmin's world. It's rechargeable (up to 2 months at an hour a day, per Garmin's manual), rated 5 ATM, tracks heart rate and HRV, and records workouts on its own and syncs later. It comes in XS-S and M-XL. It wasn't the device used in the published ring studies, and its extra features work best with a Garmin watch or bike computer.

5. Wahoo TRACKR Heart Rate

A rechargeable strap for someone who'd rather plug in than swap a coin cell: USB-C, over 100 hours a charge by Wahoo's claim, Bluetooth and ANT+, and IPX7. The catch for a ring owner is HRV. Wahoo says it provides HRV “with a compatible app,” and a Wahoo support answer says its own app doesn't record it, so it's the best pick only if they already use a third-party app that reads it. Wahoo doesn't state session memory.

Gift mistakes

• Buying “for Oura” without the generation. Ring 5 fits differently than Ring 4, and covers and cases are sold by generation.
• Buying a case for a ring that shipped with one. RingConn Gen 2 and Gen 3, Galaxy Ring and Ultrahuman Ring PRO owners already have one.
• Assuming a strap needs a watch. The Polar H10 pairs with a phone and stores a session on its own, and the Garmin HRM 600 records a workout without a watch.
