The sizing problem, solved
Smart ring sizes are not jewellery sizes and they are not consistent between brands. Oura lists the Ring 5 in sizes 6-13 on its own sizing scale, the Ring 4 in 4-15; Samsung lists the Galaxy Ring from 5 to 15; RingConn and Ultrahuman each publish their own range. Borrowing a ring from their jewellery box and measuring it tells you less than you think, because a smart ring is wider, thicker, and has to sit flat against the skin to read a pulse at all.
The clean answer is to make the sizing kit the gift. It is a set of plastic dummy rings; they wear one for a day, confirm a size, and the real ring is ordered afterwards. It is less dramatic to unwrap and far better than a ring that spins. Oura says that when you buy a sizing kit from a retailer you get a credit towards an Oura Ring purchase from that retailer - a coupon code at Amazon, a gift card at Best Buy, Costco and Target - and that some retailers let you try a kit in a physical store. Samsung ships the Galaxy Ring sizing kit first, before you confirm the size, as part of the normal order flow.
If you are determined to hand over the actual ring on the day, the fallback is to buy from a channel with a real return window and keep the receipt in the box. The gift with a bill attached
This is the part gift guides skip. An Oura Ring arrives with one included month of membership; after that the person you gave it to is asked for a card, and the full feature set stops without one. You can prepay an annual membership with a new ring bought from Oura's own store, and Oura says the giftee still gets the complimentary month on top - but after the prepaid period the bill lands on them. RingConn, Samsung and Ultrahuman require no plan at all.
So decide deliberately: either give a no-fee ring, or give a fee-based ring with the first year prepaid and tell them plainly what happens in month thirteen. Handing someone a present that quietly starts charging them is the one failure mode worth engineering out. The full fee picture is on smart ring subscription costs.
Matching the ring to the person
- Curious, not committed. A low-cost no-fee ring. They will either wear it for a year or stop in a fortnight, and neither outcome should cost anyone a monthly fee.
- Already tracks everything. They probably have an opinion about brands. A sizing kit plus a note offering to buy whichever ring they pick beats guessing.
- Sleeps badly and talks about it. The sleep record is the strongest thing these devices do - the sleep roundup is the right starting point.
- Has an Android phone and a Samsung handset specifically. The Galaxy Ring needs a Samsung account on a Samsung Galaxy phone to set up - a real constraint, covered on best smart ring for Android.
- Already owns a ring. Then this is the wrong page - accessories are on gifts for smart ring owners.
Published specs
Returns, warranties and who can claim
Gifts get returned, so read the terms before you buy rather than after. RingConn's published policy allows returns within 14 calendar days with a valid reason and only if the product has not been opened and used, says the buyer pays return shipping, and states plainly that sizing kits are consumables and are neither refundable nor returnable. On the warranty side RingConn is unusually generous about who can claim: it says the warranty applies to original owners and is transferable to further owners, which is exactly the clause that matters for a present.
Oura says returns, exchanges and refunds for rings bought from a retailer must be handled with that retailer, not with Oura. If you buy at Amazon, the Amazon return window is the one that applies. What to put in the box
A sizing kit, a short note explaining that the real ring comes once they have picked a size, and - if you are giving a ring that charges a fee - a plain sentence about when the billing starts. If you are giving a ring outright, add a charging case for the rings that do not include one. Oura ships none; RingConn includes one with the Gen 3. Case options are on chargers and charging cases.

Mistakes to avoid
- Guessing the size from an existing ring. Smart rings are wider and must sit flat. Use the kit.
- Assuming sizes transfer between brands. They do not. An Oura 9 is not a RingConn 9.
- Giving a subscription ring without saying so. The first month is included; the thirteenth is not.
- Buying a sizing kit expecting to return it. RingConn calls sizing kits consumables and does not take them back.
- Giving a Galaxy Ring to someone without a Samsung phone. Setup requires a Samsung account on a Samsung Galaxy handset.
