
The answer in numbers
If you want HRV from a ring you can lean on, the evidence says: overnight, at rest, in healthy adults, the best rings get close to a chest strap. Outside those conditions, nobody has shown it. Here is every ring-versus-strap or ring-versus-ECG HRV result we found:

That's the whole list. We found no HRV validation of the Samsung Galaxy Ring, Ultrahuman Ring PRO, Circular Ring 2, RingConn Gen 3 or Gen 2 Air, or Oura Ring 5. Our smart ring accuracy pillar has the full study table, sleep included.
What HRV is, and why rings read it at night
Your heart doesn't beat like a metronome. The gap between one beat and the next shifts by a few milliseconds all the time, and heart rate variability (HRV) measures that shifting. The studies on this page mostly report HRV as rMSSD: the root mean square of successive differences between beats, in milliseconds. Take the gap between each pair of neighboring beats, see how much each gap differs from the one before, and average those differences in a particular way. A bigger number means more beat-to-beat variation.
That's why HRV is harder to measure than heart rate. Heart rate is a count of beats over time; if the ring places one beat a few milliseconds late, the count barely changes. rMSSD is built from those few milliseconds, so small timing errors show up directly. You can see this in the data: in Dial et al., the same Oura Gen 4 ring had about three times as much error on HRV (5.96%) as on resting heart rate (1.94%).
It's also why the evidence is all about stillness. A ring reads blood flow through the finger with light, and every HRV result in the table above was measured at night or seated; we found no published ring HRV result taken during movement. Rings also feed HRV into readiness and stress features; Oura says it tracks HRV “to help you understand if you're stressed, sick, or need to take time to recover” ( Oura). Why a chest strap is the reference
The gold standard for beat timing is an ECG, which reads the heart's electrical signal through electrodes. That's what Cao et al. and Liang et al. used. You can't buy a lab, but you can buy a chest strap that reads the same kind of electrical signal from your chest. In Dial et al., the Polar H10 was “the criterion measurement,” recording single-lead ECG at 1000 Hz (Dial et al.). Independent research has also found the H10 tracks ECG closely (PMC9459793). Polar's own H10 product page doesn't mention HRV; researchers chose it anyway.
That answers the common question about chest strap vs watch heart rate. A watch and a ring both read your pulse with light through the skin. A strap like the H10 reads the electrical signal that causes the pulse. When reviewers want to know whether a wrist or finger device got it right, they check it against a strap: DC Rainmaker used a Polar H10 as the reference for Oura Ring 5 (DC Rainmaker). And in the Dial study, where two watches (a Garmin Fenix 6 and a Polar Grit X Pro) and a WHOOP 4.0 were measured against the same strap overnight, the Oura rings agreed most closely. The5krunner points out those watches were older models (the5krunner), so read that as “a ring can beat a watch at night,” not “rings beat watches.”
A strap has costs of its own: it's less comfortable to sleep in than a ring, which is why we treat it as a checking tool rather than a replacement. Our best chest strap for HRV guide compares the straps worth buying for that job.
The best study: Dial et al. 2025
“Validation of nocturnal resting heart rate and heart rate variability in consumer wearables,” published in Physiological Reports in 2025, is the study this whole site is built around. Thirteen adults wore Oura Gen 3 and Gen 4 rings, a Garmin Fenix 6, a Polar Grit X Pro and a WHOOP 4.0 while a Polar H10 recorded the reference, for a total of 536 nights. The Oura rings had the highest agreement:
- Oura Gen 4 HRV: concordance (CCC) 0.99, mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) 5.96%.
- Oura Gen 3 HRV: CCC 0.97, MAPE 7.15%.
- Oura Gen 4 resting heart rate: CCC 0.98, MAPE 1.94%.
In plain terms, a MAPE of 5.96% means that on a typical night, the ring's HRV was about 6% away from the strap's, in one direction or the other. If the strap said 50 ms, the ring would typically say something around 47 to 53 ms. A CCC of 0.99 means the two sets of numbers agreed almost perfectly across people and nights. The ECG studies: Cao 2022 and Liang 2024
Two earlier papers compared Oura's HRV with ECG rather than a strap, and both point the same way.
Cao et al., JMIR, 2022. Thirty-five healthy adults slept at home wearing an Oura ring and a Shimmer3 chest ECG. The authors concluded Oura “could accurately measure nocturnal HR and RMSSD.” The catch was in the more advanced measures: frequency-domain HRV (low frequency power and the LF:HF ratio) had high error. If an app shows you anything beyond rMSSD, treat it with less confidence. No conflicts of interest were declared (Cao et al.).
Liang et al., Sensors, 2024. Researchers at the National University of Singapore compared Oura with ECG in a lab across 92 younger and 22 older participants. Agreement was strong overall. But in the older group, HRV error was higher: more than half of older participants exceeded 10% median absolute percentage error. The team also found that stricter data-quality filters and windows of 30 minutes or longer improved accuracy (Liang et al.). No conflicts were declared.
Two practical lessons come out of Liang. If you're older, a 10% gap between your ring and a strap may simply be what the technology does for you, not a faulty ring. And if you compare a ring with a strap yourself, compare averages over 30 minutes or more, not single readings. Our chest-strap test protocol is built around exactly that.
RingConn's preprint: Tao 2026
The only no-fee ring with a strap comparison is the RingConn Gen 2. Tao et al. posted “Method comparison of a ring-based PPG device and a chest-strap monitor for heart rate and heart rate variability in shooting athletes” to Research Square in 2026. Sixty-four athletes sat for 10-minute recordings after exercise wearing the ring and a Polar H10.
- Average rMSSD bias: 1.62 ms. On average the ring and strap were very close.
- Limits of agreement: -10.08 to 13.34 ms. For an individual recording, the ring could land about 10 ms below or 13 ms above the strap. That's a wide band if your HRV sits around 40 ms.
One reviewer data point adds color, with a big caveat. Gadgets & Wearables found RingConn Gen 2's HRV correlated 82% with a WHOOP band and its resting heart rate 98% (Gadgets & Wearables). WHOOP isn't a reference device, so that tells you two estimates roughly agree, not that either is right. Our RingConn Gen 2 review covers the rest.
What this means when you choose
If overnight HRV is the reason you want a ring, the evidence gives you three honest options:
- Pay for the evidence. Oura Ring 4 is the most directly validated ring for HRV. The catch for this site's reader is the fee: HRV detail sits behind the Oura Membership ($5.99 a month or $69.99 a year), and without it Oura shows only three daily scores. - Skip the fee, and check it yourself. Buy a strap, wear it with your ring for a week, and you have your own validation, on your own finger, at your age.

How to read your ring's HRV
Even a well-validated ring can mislead you if you read it the wrong way. What the evidence supports:
- Watch the trend, not the night. A 6% typical miss means a single night can be off by a few milliseconds either way. A change that holds for a week is worth noticing; a one-night dip isn't.
- Compare yourself with yourself. Different devices calculate HRV over different windows, so your ring's number and a friend's watch number aren't comparable. Your own baseline is.
- Expect bigger misses at the extremes. Very high HRV (above roughly 60 ms rMSSD, per the5krunner's reading of Dial) and older age (Liang) both went with larger error.
- Ignore the fancy metrics. Cao found rMSSD accurate but frequency-domain HRV not. If your app shows LF/HF balance, don't base decisions on it.
- Get the fit right. Oura recommends the index finger for best accuracy (Oura Support). Our which finger guide covers the rest.
