Do you need a chest strap?
Not to use a smart ring. A ring does its main job, overnight heart rate, HRV and sleep, without any help. You need a strap for two other jobs, and if either one matters to you, it's the most useful thing you can buy after the ring itself.
Job one: checking your ring. Every ring maker publishes its own feature list, and only some rings have been measured against a reference at all. We cover that gap in how accurate smart rings are. A chest strap lets you run the same kind of comparison on your own wrist, finger and chest, instead of taking anyone's word for it.
Job two: workout heart rate you can trust. Rings hold up best when you're still. On the move, reviewers keep finding the same problem. DC Rainmaker compared the Oura Ring 5 against a Polar H10 and called it “largely pretty good” for indoor cycling and road running, but on a trail descent “the HR accuracy basically falls apart for the entire rest of the run” ( DC Rainmaker). Gadgets & Wearables found the RingConn Gen 2 “consistently reported higher values” than a chest strap on runs. Tech Advisor's Circular Ring 2 reviewer went further: “I've not tested a smart ring that I really think does a good job of tracking heart rate during exercise.” Our smart ring heart rate accuracy guide has the detail.
If you only care about sleep trends and never plan to check them, skip the strap and put the money toward a ring with no monthly fee. Our best smart rings without a subscription list starts there.
Why a strap is the reference
A ring reads your pulse with light. Oura's Ring 5 page lists green and infrared LEDs for heart rate, HRV and respiration. A chest strap reads the electrical signal of your heartbeat instead. HRV is built from the time between individual beats, so a sensor that times each beat from the heart's electrical signal is the natural yardstick for one that estimates it from blood flow in a finger.
That's why researchers reach for one. In the best ring-versus-strap study we found, Dial et al. in Physiological Reports (2025), “The Polar H10 was used as the criterion measurement” (a single-lead ECG recording at 1000 Hz). The study followed 13 adults over 536 nights and compared Oura Gen 3 and Gen 4 rings, a Garmin Fenix 6, a Polar Grit X Pro and a WHOOP 4.0 against the strap. The Oura rings agreed most closely: for Gen 4, resting heart rate error was about 1.9% and HRV error about 6% (Dial et al.). The study was funded by the US Air Force Research Laboratory, and the authors declared no competing interests.
Those percentages are mean absolute percentage error (MAPE): the average size of the gap between ring and strap, whichever direction it ran. In plain numbers, a 6% HRV error means that on a night the strap read 50 ms, the ring would typically land within about 3 ms of it. That's the best result any ring has posted against a strap in published, peer-reviewed work we found, and it's the benchmark to hold your own ring to.
The same strap shows up elsewhere. A 2026 preprint by Tao et al. compared the RingConn Gen 2 with a Polar H10 in 64 seated athletes (not peer-reviewed), and DC Rainmaker used an H10 as his reference for the Oura Ring 5. And the strap itself has been checked: an independent study of the H10 against ECG reported close agreement at rest and during incremental exercise (PMC9459793).
One distinction worth keeping straight: a chest strap is the practical reference you can buy, while an ECG in a lab (for heart data) or polysomnography in a sleep lab (for sleep) is the clinical reference. Every value links to the page it came from, and a dash means the maker doesn't publish it on the pages we checked. Two dashes matter. Garmin's manual spec page lists the HRM 600's radio as 2.4 GHz but doesn't name Bluetooth or ANT+, so confirm it pairs with the app you plan to use. And Wahoo doesn't say the TRACKR stores a session, so assume it needs a phone or head unit within range the whole time.
How we ranked them
We scored each strap on our published chest-strap rubric: reference-grade evidence (30%), HRV and app support (25%), connectivity (15%), battery and charging (15%) and fit and comfort (15%). Evidence means whether the strap has been used as the criterion device in published validation research. HRV support means whether it passes beat-to-beat data to apps, and which apps the maker supports.
We haven't worn or tested these straps. Scores come from the makers' manuals, product pages and press releases, and from the studies linked on this page; the full rubric is on our methodology page. One strap didn't make it: Garmin names an HRM 200 on its heart rate monitor guide, but we couldn't verify its specs, so it isn't here.
The picks in context
1. Polar H10
The strap to buy if the reason you want one is to check a smart ring. It's the reference device in Dial et al., in the Tao RingConn preprint and in DC Rainmaker's Oura Ring 5 test, so if your numbers line up with an H10, you're comparing against the same thing the published work did. It runs on a CR 2025 coin cell that Polar rates at about 400 hours, talks Bluetooth, ANT+ and 5 kHz (the 5 kHz link sends heart rate only), and stores one session of up to 30 hours on the strap itself, which is long enough to cover a night without a phone beside the bed. It's rated WR30.
The weaknesses are small but real. You'll replace the coin cell eventually. Polar doesn't mention HRV on its H10 page, so HRV depends on the app you pair it with. And a strap is less comfortable to sleep in than a ring, which is why it's a checking tool rather than a replacement. It's also our top gift for smart ring owners, for the same reason.
2. Garmin HRM 600
The pick if you hate coin cells. Garmin's manual rates the rechargeable lithium-ion battery at up to 2 months at an hour a day. That figure assumes an hour a day, so overnight checks will drain it much faster; plan to charge it between check-in weeks. Garmin's press release says it provides “accurate heart rate readings, while also tracking heart rate variability (HRV),” and that it can record workout data “when a smartwatch can't be worn” and sync afterward. It's rated 5 ATM and comes in two strap sizes, XS-S and M-XL.
It ranks second because it isn't the device used in the published ring studies, so you're one step removed from the research setup. Its Garmin-centric features also work best if you already own a Garmin watch or bike computer. Garmin's manual lists an operating range of 0 to 40°C (32 to 104°F), which matters if you train in the cold.
3. Wahoo TRACKR Heart Rate
A good rechargeable strap with one catch you need to know before you buy. Wahoo lists a lithium-ion battery that “recharges over USB-C” with “over 100 hours of battery life in normal conditions,” Bluetooth and ANT+ with up to three Bluetooth connections at once, and an IPX7 rating. For HRV, Wahoo's page says “Heart rate variability (HRV) with a compatible app.” The catch: a Wahoo support answer says the Wahoo app and Wahoo GPS cycling computers “do not currently support HRV display/recording” ( Wahoo Support; we saw that wording in a search snippet because the page blocked our checker).
So the TRACKR is an HRV strap only if you already use a third-party app that reads it. Wahoo also doesn't state that it stores a session, and it isn't the reference device in any ring study we found. That's why it ranks third despite solid battery and connection specs.
Using a strap to check your ring
The point of owning a reference is to compare like with like. Our step-by-step test your ring against a chest strap protocol covers the whole process. These are the principles that matter most:
- Wear both at once, at rest. The strongest published results are nighttime and resting. Dial et al. measured nocturnal heart rate and HRV, and the Tao preprint measured seated athletes. Don't judge a ring on a sprint.
- Compare the same window. A ring's overnight average and a five-minute strap reading are different numbers. Liang et al. (2024) found that 30-minute or longer windows and stricter data-quality filters improved Oura's HRV agreement with ECG (Liang et al.).
- Use several nights. One night tells you little. The Dial study pooled 536.
- Know what “close” looks like. The best published ring result was about 6% HRV error against an H10. Liang et al. found HRV error was higher in older adults, and the5krunner noted accuracy fell at very high HRV. A gap of a few percent is in line with the best evidence; a consistent large gap is worth a closer look at fit and finger.
- Get the fit right. Oura recommends the index finger for accuracy, and every brand says to size with its own kit. See which finger to wear a smart ring on.
One trap for Oura owners: without the membership, Oura says you'll only see your three daily scores (Readiness, Activity and Sleep), ring battery, basic profile, app settings and the Explore content. That list doesn't include the heart rate and HRV detail you'd compare against a strap. The membership is $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year, which comes to $209.97 over three years on the annual plan (Oura Support). The details are in what Oura's membership costs.

What to check before you buy a chest strap
- Which app will read the HRV. This is the one that trips people up. Wahoo says its own app doesn't record HRV. Polar's H10 page doesn't mention HRV at all. Garmin says the HRM 600 tracks HRV. Before you buy, confirm the app you'll actually use records HRV from that strap.
- Coin cell or rechargeable. The Polar H10 uses a CR 2025 coin cell rated around 400 hours. The Garmin HRM 600 recharges and is rated at up to 2 months at an hour a day. The Wahoo TRACKR recharges over USB-C and is rated at over 100 hours. All three figures are the makers' claims under their own conditions.
- Whether it stores a session. For overnight checks this matters more than anything else. The H10 stores one session of up to 30 hours. The HRM 600 records on its own and syncs later. Wahoo doesn't state that the TRACKR stores anything.
- How it connects. Polar lists Bluetooth, ANT+ and 5 kHz. Wahoo lists Bluetooth and ANT+ with up to three Bluetooth connections. Garmin's manual spec page names only a 2.4 GHz radio.
- Strap size. Garmin sells XS-S and M-XL. Amazon listings for the Polar H10 show M-XXL and XS-S straps. Measure your chest before you order.
- Water rating, if you swim or sweat heavily. WR30 on the Polar, 5 ATM on the Garmin, IPX7 on the Wahoo.
Match the strap to the gear you already own
The ranking above assumes the strap's main job is checking a ring. If you already own training gear, that can change the answer:
- You own a Garmin watch or bike computer. The HRM 600 is the natural fit: Garmin's strap-specific features work best inside Garmin's own ecosystem, and it recharges. You give up the exact match with the research setup, which only matters if you want to compare your numbers with the published ones.
- You ride with a Wahoo head unit. The TRACKR pairs over Bluetooth and ANT+, but by Wahoo's own support answer its app and GPS computers don't display or record HRV. For ring checks you'd still need a third-party HRV app.
- You mix brands, or own nothing yet. The Polar H10 is the safe default. Bluetooth plus ANT+ covers most phones, watches and gym equipment, and the on-strap memory means the phone doesn't have to stay connected.
- You only want to check a ring once. Buy the strap you're most likely to keep using for workouts afterward. A check-in week is useful; a strap that lives in a drawer isn't.
Chest strap mistakes
- Buying for HRV without checking the app. The strap sends the data; the app decides whether you ever see it.
- Judging your ring on one night. A single mismatch can come from fit, a restless night or a different time window. Look for a pattern over a week.
- Comparing during exercise and blaming the ring. That's a real finding (reviewers saw rings drift on runs), but it's a different question from whether overnight HRV is accurate. Test the use you care about.
- Expecting to sleep in a strap every night. It's a checking tool. Wear it for a check-in week, then let the ring do the daily work.
- Forgetting the ring's side of the bill. If your ring hides HRV behind a membership, the strap can't fix that. Our best smart ring for sleep tracking ranks rings that show everything with no fee.
