Why HRV is the metric to buy for
Steps are a guess. Calories are a guess built on the first guess. Sleep stages are an inference from movement and pulse. Heart rate variability is different: it comes straight out of the interval between consecutive heartbeats, which a photoplethysmography sensor on a finger can detect reasonably well when you are lying still, warm and asleep. Those are the exact conditions a ring measures in, which is why overnight HRV is the one number a ring is genuinely well placed to produce.
It is also the number with the clearest use: your own HRV trend, compared with your own baseline, moves when you are getting ill, drinking, under-slept or training hard. Not a diagnosis, not a prediction - a trend line that reflects something real about your autonomic state.
What has actually been validated
Nothing comparable exists for the other rings. RingConn's best-evidenced claim comes from Tao et al. (2026), a preprint comparing ring photoplethysmography against a chest strap in shooting athletes, which has not been through peer review. We found no peer-reviewed Galaxy Ring validation at all, and Ultrahuman's published sleep heart rate work is an in-house pilot study. That is not a claim that those rings are wrong; it is a claim that nobody independent has checked. We walk through each study, its sample and its funding on smart ring HRV vs a chest strap.
How we ranked them
- Independent, peer-reviewed HRV validation of this model or its direct predecessor, against an ECG or a chest strap. Weighted hardest.
- Whether the HRV detail is paywalled. An HRV trend you can only see in summary is a weaker product than the same trend you can open up.
- Nights per charge. HRV is baseline-relative, and a baseline needs unbroken nights.
- Export. If you want to do anything serious with HRV, you will eventually want the numbers out of the app.

How to read your own HRV
Three rules make ring HRV useful and ignoring them makes it noise.
- Never compare your HRV with anyone else's. Absolute values vary enormously between people by age and genetics. Only your own rolling baseline means anything.
- Use a weekly window. Single nights move for reasons that have nothing to do with your health - a late meal, a warm room, a glass of wine.
- Keep the measurement window the same. Rings sample during sleep; apps that read a chest strap sample while you are awake and still. The two are not interchangeable numbers, only comparable trends.
If you want to audit the ring, the protocol is simple and on test your ring against a chest strap: two weeks of same-time morning readings with a Polar H10 beside the ring's overnight figure, plotted together. Our strap picks are ranked on best chest strap for HRV.
What HRV costs on each ring
This is where the ranking gets uncomfortable. The ring with the best HRV evidence is also the one that charges a membership for as long as you own it - and without that membership you do not get the HRV detail, only the three daily scores. RingConn and Ultrahuman charge nothing. So the real question is not “which ring measures HRV best” but “how much is the extra confidence worth to you per year?” The arithmetic is on smart ring subscription costs, and the no-fee field is ranked on best smart rings without a subscription.
One more route worth knowing: Oura can write HRV into Apple Health, which changes what you can do with the data outside Oura's own app. What does and does not sync is on Oura HRV in Apple Health.

Rank 01

Best HRV evidence of any ring
Oura Ring 5
The only ring family whose overnight HRV has been through peer review against both an ECG and a Polar H10 chest strap. The catch is the membership: without it you see three daily scores, not the HRV detail.

- 3
- Evidence of accuracy (25%)
- 8
- Battery (claimed) (15%)
- 6
- Sizing & fit (10%)
- 7
- Data ownership (10%)
- 4
- Platform support (10%)
- 9
What the specs support
- Oura's Gen 3 and Gen 4 rings have the strongest independent validation of any ring we found, including the only peer-reviewed study against a Polar H10 chest strap
- Works on iPhone and Android
- Waterproof to 100 m
- Brand-made sizing kit available on Amazon
Where it falls short
- Without the membership you see only three daily scores
- The membership fee runs for as long as you use the ring (three-year math on every Oura page)
- Batteries are excluded from the 1-year warranty
- Ring 5 itself has not yet been through the published studies its predecessors have
- Narrower size range (6-13) than Ring 4 (4-15)
Skip this if…
…You won't pay a monthly or yearly fee for your own sleep data: without the membership, Oura shows only its three daily scores.

Best HRV ring with no fee
RingConn Gen 3
Overnight HRV with nothing to pay, up to 14 days a charge and a charging case in the box. The evidence behind it is thinner - RingConn's strongest study is a 2026 preprint on a Gen 2.

- Widest size range here (6-15), with a free sizing kit before the ring ships
- Legal US status settled: licensed by Oura since October 2025
Where it falls short
- No published validation study of Gen 3 found; evidence comes from the Gen 2 preprint
- The Gadgeteer's reviewer got about 10 days with vibration alerts on, not 14
- Normal battery capacity loss isn't covered by the warranty

- Can store one session on its own, so you don't need a phone nearby
Where it falls short
- Coin cell needs replacing eventually
- A chest strap is less comfortable to sleep in than a ring, so it's a checking tool, not a replacement

…You'd rather never swap a coin cell: Garmin's HRM 600 is rechargeable.

Mistakes to avoid
- Buying a ring for daytime HRV. Finger photoplethysmography during movement is the weakest case for this hardware. If you want HRV while awake or training, that is a chest strap job.
- Chasing a higher number. HRV is not a score to maximise. A stable baseline that dips when you are run down is the device working correctly.
- Assuming every brand measures the same thing. Some report rMSSD, some report SDNN, some report a proprietary index. Read the app's own definition before you compare anything.
- Paying a membership and never exporting. If you are going to pay, at least pull the CSV out periodically so the history is yours.
How we scored this
How these picks were chosen
Every pick here is labeled Researched: chosen from each brand's fee policy, spec sheet, sizing and warranty pages, and the published studies that measured the ring (or its predecessor) against a chest strap, an ECG or a sleep lab, then scored on a public rubric. Every figure links to where it came from, and maker performance numbers are labeled “maker's claim,” so you can see exactly what you're paying for before you buy.
Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.
