What a recovery score actually is
Oura calls it Readiness. Ultrahuman calls it a recovery score. Whoop calls it recovery. Underneath the branding, each one is a weighted blend of the same inputs: how low your heart rate settled overnight, how much beat-to-beat variation (HRV) there was while it was down there, how long and how continuously you slept, and how all of that compares with your own recent baseline. There is no recovery sensor in any ring. There is a green LED, an infrared LED, a photodiode, an accelerometer and a temperature sensor, and then software.
That matters for buying, because it means the question “which ring has the best recovery score?” collapses into three answerable ones. Does it measure overnight heart rate and HRV in a way somebody has checked against a reference device? Will it be on your finger every night, or flat in a drawer? And can you see the inputs - not just the headline score - without paying?
How we ranked them
- Published overnight HR and HRV evidence. A recovery score built on a shaky HRV reading is decoration. We weight independent validation above brand-funded studies, and brand-funded above in-house blog posts.
- Nights of continuous wear per charge. Recovery is a baseline-relative metric. Miss three nights and the baseline is guessing. Battery life and a charging case are recovery features.
- Access to the inputs without a fee. A score you can see but cannot interrogate is worth less than the numbers behind it.
- Three-year cost of ownership. Hardware is a one-off. A membership is not.
What the studies show
Beyond it, Cao et al. (JMIR, 2022) and Liang et al. (Sensors, 2024) both looked at Oura nocturnal heart rate and HRV against ECG-grade references and found the overnight numbers usable at the trend level. No peer-reviewed validation of the Galaxy Ring surfaced in our search, and RingConn's strongest evidence is a 2026 preprint (Tao et al.) that has not been peer-reviewed. The full reading list, with what each study did and did not test, is on smart ring accuracy and HRV versus a chest strap.
The honest summary: Oura has the evidence, everyone else has specs. That is a real reason to prefer Oura if you are going to make training decisions from the number - and not a reason to pay a membership forever if you are going to look at it once a week.

What the number costs over three years
| Ring | Required plan | Fees, 1 yr | Fees, 3 yrs | Fees, 5 yrs | Ring price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| RingConn Gen 3 | No subscription | $0 | $0 | $0 | $349.00 |
| Oura Ring 5 | $5.99/month or $69.99/year | $69.99 | $209.97 | $349.95 | $399.00 |
| Ultrahuman Ring PRO | No subscription (optional extras) | $0 | $0 | $0 | $479.00 |
Two of these three rings cost nothing to keep reading. The third charges for as long as you wear it, and the fee is not for the hardware - it is for the software layer that turns the hardware's numbers into the score. Whether that is worth it is a genuine question, and we work through it on the Oura Ring without a subscription.
Read the trend, not the day
Every brand would rather you opened the app each morning. The useful signal is weekly. A single low recovery score after a late meal, a glass of wine or a cold coming on tells you something you already knew; a resting heart rate that has crept up four beats across two weeks tells you something you did not. Set the app to a seven-day view and check it on the same day each week.
If your training is structured around these numbers, the thing to understand is that no ring has been validated for same-day readiness decisions. The studies measure agreement with a reference device night by night, which is a different claim from “this score predicts how your session will go.”
How to check your ring's number
You can audit the ring yourself for the price of a chest strap. Wear a Polar H10 for a five-minute reading at the same time each morning for two weeks, log the rMSSD from any HRV app, and plot it against the ring's overnight HRV. You are not looking for identical numbers - different windows, different sensors - you are looking for the two lines moving the same direction on the same days. Our step-by-step protocol is on test your ring against a chest strap, and the strap options are ranked on best chest strap for HRV.

Where it falls short
- No published validation study of Gen 3 found; evidence comes from the Gen 2 preprint
- The Gadgeteer's reviewer got about 10 days with vibration alerts on, not 14
- Normal battery capacity loss isn't covered by the warranty

Best evidence behind the number
Oura Ring 5
Oura's earlier generations are the only rings with peer-reviewed overnight HRV results against a chest strap. Readiness is one of the three scores you keep without the membership - the detail behind it is not.

Where it falls short
- Without the membership you see only three daily scores

- Batteries are excluded from the 1-year warranty
- Ring 5 itself has not yet been through the published studies its predecessors have
- Narrower size range (6-13) than Ring 4 (4-15)

The reference you check the ring against
Polar H10
The chest strap researchers used as the criterion device when they tested rings. A morning reading on an H10 is the cheapest way to find out whether your ring's HRV trend is tracking reality.

- 10
- HRV & app support (25%)
- 8
- Connectivity (15%)
- 9
- Battery & charging (15%)
- 8

What the specs support
- The reference device in the one peer-reviewed ring-vs-chest-strap study we found
- Bluetooth and ANT+, so it pairs with phones, watches and gym gear
- Coin-cell battery rated around 400 hours: no charging
- Can store one session on its own, so you don't need a phone nearby
Where it falls short
- Coin cell needs replacing eventually
- A chest strap is less comfortable to sleep in than a ring, so it's a checking tool, not a replacement

…You'd rather never swap a coin cell: Garmin's HRM 600 is rechargeable.

Mistakes to avoid
- Buying the ring with the prettiest score and the shortest battery. A recovery baseline needs nights. Gaps are the single biggest thing that degrades the number.
- Treating the score as a verdict on your training. It is a summary of last night's heart data, not a coach. None of these devices is a medical device.
- Paying a membership to see a number you will glance at weekly. Run the three-year math before you commit - the fee arithmetic is here.
- Comparing your HRV with someone else's. Absolute HRV is close to meaningless between people. Your own baseline is the only comparison that works.
- Sizing in the morning. A loose ring gives a noisy overnight signal, which is exactly the signal the recovery score is built on. Start with the sizing guide.
How we scored this
How these picks were chosen
Every pick here is labeled Researched: chosen from each brand's fee policy, spec sheet, sizing and warranty pages, and the published studies that measured the ring (or its predecessor) against a chest strap, an ECG or a sleep lab, then scored on a public rubric. Every figure links to where it came from, and maker performance numbers are labeled “maker's claim,” so you can see exactly what you're paying for before you buy.
Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.
What changed
