Smart ring stress tracking: what your HRV is really saying

A ring doesn't measure stress. It measures your heart, mostly overnight, and turns heart rate variability into a guess about how you're coping. What that guess is worth, what's been validated, and which rings show it with no fee.

Not medical advice. Smart rings are consumer wellness devices, not diagnostic tools, unless a specific feature has regulatory authorization (we name it where one exists). This page reports what published studies and makers state, with sources. If a reading worries you, talk to a clinician. Our health-content rules.

What a ring measures when it says “stress”

There's no stress sensor in a ring. What there is: LEDs that read your pulse through your finger. Oura's Ring 5 page lists green and infrared LEDs for heart rate, HRV and respiration. Heart rate variability is the variation in time between individual heartbeats, and it's the number every ring stress feature leans on.

Oura puts it most honestly on its own product page: “Oura tracks your HRV to help you understand if you're stressed, sick, or need to take time to recover” ( Oura). Read that sentence twice. Stressed, sick, or in need of recovery: the same signal can point to any of the three. That's not a knock on Oura. It's the most accurate description of what HRV-based stress tracking is.

Samsung frames it differently. The Galaxy Ring's Energy Score “with Galaxy AI” calculates “your physical readiness based on yesterday's sleep, heart rate and activities.” That's a readiness number built from several inputs, not a stress reading. Either way, you're looking at an estimate built on top of heart data, which is why the accuracy of the heart data is the part worth checking. That's the question our accuracy hub exists to answer.

What HRV can and can't tell you

What it can do: show you when your night looked different from your usual. By Oura's own framing, a run of lower-than-usual nights is the kind of change the feature is built to flag. Over weeks, the trend becomes your own record to compare against.

What it can't do: tell you why. By Oura's own wording it could be stress, illness or a need for recovery, and the ring can't tell those apart for you. It also can't assess anxiety or any other mental health condition. None of the brand wording we checked for this page claims to detect anxiety.

One more limit: HRV is personal. The studies below found ring accuracy varied with age and with how high your HRV runs, so your number means most when you compare it with your own history, not with someone else's.

What the evidence says

There's decent evidence that some rings measure nighttime HRV well. There's none we could find that any ring's stress score means what it says. Those are different claims, so we'll take them separately.

HRV accuracy: good at night, for Oura

  • Dial et al., Physiological Reports (2025). Oura Gen 3 and Gen 4 against a Polar H10 chest strap, 13 adults, 536 nights. Oura Gen 4's HRV error was about 6% (MAPE 5.96%, agreement 0.99); Gen 3's was about 7%. Funded by the US Air Force Research Laboratory, no competing interests. The caveats: small sample, nighttime and resting only, and the5krunner noted accuracy dropped above about 60 ms rMSSD (Dial et al.).
  • Cao et al., JMIR (2022). Oura against a chest ECG in 35 healthy adults at home. Oura “could accurately measure nocturnal HR and RMSSD,” but its frequency-based measures (LF and the LF:HF ratio) had high error.
  • Liang et al., Sensors (2024). Oura against ECG in 92 younger and 22 older adults. Strong agreement overall, but HRV error was higher in older adults, with more than half above 10%. Stricter data-quality filters and windows of 30 minutes or more improved accuracy (Liang et al.).

HRV accuracy: thinner for everyone else

  • RingConn Gen 2: a 2026 preprint by Tao et al. compared it with a Polar H10 in 64 seated athletes after exercise. RMSSD bias was 1.62 ms, with limits of agreement from -10.08 to 13.34 ms. It's not peer-reviewed and covers seated, low-motion conditions only. Separately, Gadgets & Wearables found the Gen 2's HRV correlated 82% with a WHOOP, which is a comparison with another wearable, not a reference.
  • Samsung Galaxy Ring: we found no peer-reviewed validation study.

For the full comparison of ring HRV against a strap, see smart ring HRV vs a chest strap. If you want to check your own ring, the best chest strap for HRV is the Polar H10, the reference device in the Dial study.

How each ring presents it

Figures as published by the maker or on the product listing; each value links to its source. A dash means the figure isn't in our cited sources. Hardware prices aren't shown: they change daily, so check the live price on Amazon.

RingConn Gen 2: HRV with no fee

RingConn charges no subscription, so whatever HRV data the app shows, you keep seeing it. We didn't find a stress score among the headline features RingConn lists, and we haven't verified how its app labels stress, so we judge it on HRV alone: a preprint against a Polar H10 at rest and a reviewer comparison with a WHOOP. It needs iOS 17 or Android 10 or newer. More in our RingConn Gen 2 review.

Oura Ring 4: the best HRV evidence, behind a fee

Oura Gen 4 is the ring model in the Dial study, so its HRV evidence is direct rather than inherited. The catch is the membership. Without it, Oura says you'll only see your three daily scores (Readiness, Activity and Sleep), ring battery, basic profile, app settings and the Explore content (Oura Support). Your HRV trend isn't on that list. The membership is $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year. Ring 4 is no longer on Oura's current ring list but is listed on Amazon, in sizes 4-15. See the Oura Ring 4 review and what an Oura ring does without a subscription.

Samsung Galaxy Ring: a readiness score for Samsung phones

The Galaxy Ring charges no fee, and Energy Score gives you a daily readiness number built on sleep, heart rate and activity. But Energy Score insights need a compatible Samsung Galaxy AI phone, the ring doesn't work with iPhone, and we found no peer-reviewed validation of it. We also didn't verify a separate stress feature on the Samsung ring page we checked. Our Galaxy Ring subscription explainer covers what the phone requirement costs you instead of a fee.

What to look for in a ring for stress tracking

  1. HRV you can see without paying. The number behind any stress feature should be visible. Oura gates it behind the membership; RingConn and Samsung don't charge.
  2. Evidence for that model's HRV. Oura Gen 4 has a peer-reviewed chest-strap comparison. RingConn Gen 2 has a preprint. The Galaxy Ring has none we found.
  3. A battery that lets you wear it every night. The studies measured HRV overnight, and a trend needs nights. RingConn claims 10-12 days for Gen 2; Oura claims 5-8 days for Ring 4; Samsung claims up to 7 days for sizes 12-13 and up to 6 for smaller sizes. See our battery life guide.
  4. Your phone. Galaxy Ring is Android only. RingConn and Oura work on both.
  5. A good fit on the right finger. Oura recommends the index finger for accuracy; see which finger to wear a smart ring on.

Why RingConn first when Oura has better evidence? This site is for buyers who won't pay a monthly fee to see their own data, and the RingConn shows HRV for free. If evidence matters more to you than the fee, Oura Ring 4 is the defensible choice, and the Oura vs RingConn comparison puts the three-year cost next to the evidence.

Using HRV without obsessing over it

  • Watch the weekly trend, not the daily number. Single nights bounce around. A trend over a week or two is what the feature is good for.
  • Compare yourself with yourself. Ring accuracy varied with age (Liang) and at very high HRV (the5krunner on Dial), so a friend's number tells you nothing about yours.
  • Pair the number with how you feel. Oura's own framing is stressed, sick or needing recovery. You're the one who knows which.
  • Check your ring once if the numbers matter to you. Our test your ring against a chest strap protocol shows how.
  • Put sleep first. Every study above measured HRV overnight. Our best smart ring for sleep tracking ranks the rings for that job.

Stress tracking mistakes

  • Treating a stress score as a diagnosis. It's a brand's interpretation of your heart data, and we found no study validating one.
  • Assuming good HRV accuracy means a good stress score. The studies tested the signal, not the label.
  • Paying a membership for a stress label. Oura's membership comes to $209.97 over three years on the annual plan. Make sure it's the evidence you're paying for, not the label. Our best smart rings without a subscription list shows the no-fee options.
  • Reading daytime numbers like nighttime ones. The evidence is nighttime and at rest. Movement is where rings struggle; see smart ring heart rate accuracy.
  • Letting the number make you more stressed. If checking it every morning feels like a test you might fail, check it weekly instead.

How we scored this

Rings we claim to have lab-tested: 0

Plenty of ring reviews say they wore everything they rank. We haven't, and we say so. Every pick here is labeled Researched: we read each brand's fee policy, spec sheet, sizing and warranty pages, and the published studies that tested the ring (or its predecessor) against a chest strap, an ECG or a sleep lab, then scored it on a public rubric. Every figure links to where it came from, and maker performance numbers are labeled “maker's claim.”

Scores are editorial judgments from that documented research, not test results. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

Questions

Frequently asked

Can a smart ring measure stress?
Not directly. Rings measure heart rate variability (HRV), mostly at night, and brands interpret it. Oura says its HRV helps you understand “if you're stressed, sick, or need to take time to recover,” which is a fair description: the ring can't tell those apart for you.
Is a smart ring good for anxiety?
A ring isn't an anxiety tool. None of the brand wording we checked claims to detect anxiety, and we found no study validating any ring's stress score. If anxiety is affecting your life, talk to a clinician or mental health professional.
How accurate is smart ring HRV?
For Oura, good at night: Dial et al. (2025) found Oura Gen 4's HRV error was about 6% against a Polar H10 chest strap across 536 nights. Evidence for other rings is thinner: a preprint for RingConn Gen 2 and nothing peer-reviewed for the Galaxy Ring. More in smart ring HRV vs a chest strap.
Does the Samsung Galaxy Ring track stress?
Samsung's ring page describes Energy Score, a readiness number from your sleep, heart rate and activity. We didn't verify a separate stress feature on the page we checked. Energy Score insights need a compatible Samsung Galaxy AI phone.
Do I need an Oura membership to see my HRV?
Without the membership, Oura says you'll see only your three daily scores, ring battery, basic profile, app settings and Explore content. Your HRV trend isn't on that list. See what Oura's membership costs.
What does a low HRV mean on a smart ring?
That your night looked different from your usual. By Oura's own wording, it could mean you're stressed, sick or need recovery. Look at the trend over several nights and at how you feel before reading much into it.
