What each maker publishes
- RingConn Gen 3: “About 90 minutes to fully charge,” per RingConn's own product page FAQ, with the universal charging case taking about 120 minutes to fill itself.
- RingConn Gen 2: magnetic charging, approximately 90 minutes to a full charge, on RingConn's specification list.
- Samsung Galaxy Ring: Samsung's support page says you can fully charge the ring in about 90 minutes using the charging case, and adds that a completely flat ring “may take at least ten minutes” before it begins working again.
- Oura Ring 5: no charge time on the store page. Oura publishes battery life (6-9 days, depending on ring size and usage) but not how long a refill takes.
- Ultrahuman Ring PRO: Ultrahuman describes UltraSnap charging technology with DC magnetic pins “for quicker recharges,” but does not state a time in minutes on its US buy page.
- Garmin Index Sleep Monitor (not a ring, but the common alternative): Garmin's manual gives up to 2 hours from a USB port.
Where a maker does not publish a figure, we do not invent one. The claims above are the maker's own and each is linked in the sources.
Why so few brands say
Charge time is an awkward number for a brand, because it depends on how flat the ring is, the size of the cell inside it, the ambient temperature and the power source. Samsung's own documentation makes the size dependency explicit for battery life - 17 mAh cells in sizes 5-7, 18.5 mAh in 8-11 and 22.5 mAh in 12-15, with different claimed days per size - and the same physics applies in reverse when filling them.
The practical consequence: treat 90 minutes as a reasonable planning figure for any current ring, and expect a larger size on a weak USB port to take longer. The claimed days per charge, with all the brands' own caveats, are on smart ring battery life.
What happens when a ring goes completely flat
Nothing dramatic, but it is not instant either. Samsung warns that a fully depleted Galaxy Ring may take at least ten minutes on the charger before it starts working again - so if you put a dead ring on and nothing lights up, wait before assuming the charger is broken.
The bigger cost of letting a ring go flat is the hole in the data. Readiness, recovery and HRV baselines are comparisons against your own recent nights; a missing night makes the next few days' numbers less meaningful. That is the real argument for charging on a schedule rather than on a warning.
Charging cases change the question
A case is a battery that charges the ring, which turns “how long does it take” into “where do I have to be while it happens.” RingConn includes a universal charging case with the Gen 3, rated at about 120 minutes to charge itself and good for many ring top-ups between wall sockets. Ultrahuman claims up to 45 days of combined runtime with its PRO Charger. Oura ships no case at all, which is why third-party cases exist for Oura owners.
If you travel, the case is the feature that matters more than the ring's own charge time - full options are on chargers and charging cases.
What to look for
- A published charge time at all. A brand that states one is a brand you can hold to it.
- A case in the box, not as an accessory purchase.
- A standard cable. USB-C beats a proprietary puck you can lose.
- Enough days per charge that charging is a weekly event, not a nightly one - that is the whole advantage a ring has over a watch.

A routine that costs you no nights
Pick a fixed slot that is always ring-free anyway: the shower, the gym session, the commute, or the hour after dinner. Charge in that window once or twice a week rather than waiting for a low-battery warning, and the ring will never be off your finger at bedtime. Two habits make that easier - charge at the same time of day so it becomes automatic, and keep the charger somewhere you physically pass, not in a drawer.
If your battery is draining faster than it used to, that is a different problem with its own causes, covered for each brand on RingConn battery drain, Galaxy Ring battery drain and smart ring battery lifespan.
Mistakes people make
- Charging overnight. The one window the ring exists to measure.
- Waiting for the warning. It usually arrives at a time that is inconvenient, which is how nights get missed.
- Assuming a flat ring is broken. Samsung says at least ten minutes before a dead Galaxy Ring wakes up.
- Buying a case that does not match your ring size. Several cases are size-specific; RingConn's Gen 3 case is the exception, being compatible with all its rings and sizes.
- Leaving it on charge for days. Nothing here is improved by it, and the maker safety pages are worth reading - see smart ring battery swelling.
How we scored this
How these picks were chosen
Every pick here is labeled Researched: chosen from each brand's fee policy, spec sheet, sizing and warranty pages, and the published studies that measured the ring (or its predecessor) against a chest strap, an ECG or a sleep lab, then scored on a public rubric. Every figure links to where it came from, and maker performance numbers are labeled “maker's claim,” so you can see exactly what you're paying for before you buy.
Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.
