Is the Oura Ring worth it? The case for and against

What you pay

An Oura ring has two costs. The ring is a one-time purchase; we link to the live price rather than print one that could be stale tomorrow. The membership is $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year in the US, new members get one month included, and Oura says “There currently is no option to purchase or upgrade to a Lifetime Membership” (Oura Support). Here's how that compares with two rings that charge nothing:

Two things soften the fee for some people. Oura says the membership, like the ring, can be paid for with HSA or FSA funds (our HSA/FSA guide covers the conditions). And owners of the old Gen2 ring don't need a membership, while some early Gen3 buyers kept grandfathered lifetime plans. Neither grandfathered route is open to anyone buying a ring today. What you get without the membership

This is the part that decides it for most readers of this site. Without the membership, Oura says you'll “only be able to see your three daily Oura scores (Readiness, Activity, and Sleep), ring battery, basic profile information, app settings, and the Explore content.” Everything else Oura advertises for Ring 5, from Symptom Radar and Cardiovascular Age to Blood Pressure Signals, Cycle Insights and the heart rate and HRV detail behind the scores, sits on the paid side. Oura's store puts it plainly: the membership “unlocks personalized insights, an AI health companion, and new features as they arrive.”

So the honest answer to “is Oura worth it without a subscription” is no, not as a health tracker. You'd be paying for a ring that shows three numbers. Our Oura without a subscription guide lists exactly what stays and what goes.

The case for Oura

Oura's strongest argument is evidence. More independent research has been published on Oura rings than on any other ring we cover, and some of it is exactly the kind this site cares about: a ring checked against a reference device by people who don't work for the brand.

• Dial et al. (2025, Physiological Reports). Oura Gen 3 and Gen 4 against a Polar H10 chest strap over 536 nights in 13 adults. The Oura rings agreed most closely of the wearables tested; Gen 4's resting heart rate error was 1.94% and its HRV error 5.96%. Funded by the US Air Force Research Laboratory; the authors declared no competing interests.
• Cao et al. (2022, JMIR). Against a chest ECG in 35 healthy adults at home, Oura “could accurately measure nocturnal HR and RMSSD,” though its frequency-based HRV measures had high error. No conflicts declared.
• Svensson et al. (2024, Sleep Medicine). Oura Gen3 against multi-night home polysomnography in 96 people: about 91.7% accuracy for sleep versus wake, with REM time underestimated by about 4-6 minutes.
• Khan et al. (2025, OTO Open). A meta-analysis of six studies (388 people) found no statistically significant differences from medical-grade sleep studies for total sleep time, sleep efficiency or time in each stage.

Beyond the research, Ring 5 works with iPhone and Android, is waterproof to 100 meters, weighs from 2 grams depending on size, and Oura's store says it's HSA/FSA eligible. The case against

The fee never ends

Keep a ring for five years and the membership alone comes to $349.95 on the annual plan. There's no point at which you've paid it off. Every ring RingConn sells costs nothing a year to use, and our Oura vs RingConn comparison puts that gap next to the evidence gap.

Ring 5's own evidence is still thin

The studies above are on older Oura rings. DC Rainmaker's Ring 5 review found workout heart rate against a Polar H10 “largely pretty good” on indoor rides and road runs, but on a trail descent “the HR accuracy basically falls apart for the entire rest of the run.” On sleep, he found “no meaningful difference between Oura and other wearables for core sleep stats” ( DC Rainmaker). That cuts both ways: Oura isn't worse, but you may not be buying better sleep numbers either.

Battery and warranty

Oura claims 6-9 days per charge for Ring 5, “depending on ring size and usage”; DC Rainmaker got 6-7. There's no charging case in the box. RingConn claims 10-12 days for Gen 2 and up to 14 for Gen 3, each with a case. Oura's US warranty runs one year from purchase and excludes batteries as consumable parts, and we found no battery replacement program described (Oura Warranty FAQs). That matters more than usual: Android Authority reported that Oura's pre-IPO filing showed an “$84.4 million increase in warranty expenses during fiscal 2025” tied to Ring 4 battery problems. Oura sells optional protection plans ($45 for two years, $60 for three, per its store); we couldn't confirm whether they cover battery wear, so ask before you add one. Sizing and health claims

Ring 5 comes in sizes 6-13, narrower than Ring 4's 4-15, and Oura says Ring 5's “redesigned interior fits differently than Oura Ring 4,” so a Ring 4 owner can't reuse their size. On health features, no Oura feature is FDA-cleared; Oura is pursuing clearance for blood pressure (MedTech Dive), so Blood Pressure Signals is a wellness trend, not a reading to act on. Worth it for whom?

On our published rubric, Oura Ring 5 scores 5.8/10, mostly because the membership costs it on the heaviest-weighted line (three-year cost). It scores well on evidence. That's the trade in one number. For the broader question, see are smart rings worth it?

What to check before you decide

1. Price the membership for the years you'll own the ring. Use the table above, not the included first month.
2. Size with the Ring 5 kit specifically. Oura says sizing differs between generations and from standard US sizes.
3. Decide how you'll pay. If you have HSA or FSA funds, Oura says both the ring and a prepaid membership bought with a new ring qualify.
4. Read the battery exclusion. The warranty doesn't cover it.
5. Compare a no-fee ring over the same years. The best smart rings without a subscription ranks them.

Oura buying mistakes

• Treating the included month as the price. The first month is free; the next one isn't.
• Reusing your Ring 4 size for Ring 5. Oura says the new interior fits differently.
• Expecting the membership to make readings more accurate. It unlocks insights and features; the sensors are the same whether you pay or not.
• Assuming the warranty covers the battery. Oura excludes batteries as consumable parts.
• Buying a discounted Ring 4 without pricing the membership. Gizmodo reported Amazon clearance pricing on Ring 4 after Ring 5 launched, but a lower ring price doesn't change the fee.
