What the channel actually changes
- Sizing. Brand stores ship a kit and hold your order until you confirm a size. Retailers sell you a size off the shelf and hand you a credit for the kit.
- Returns. Brand return windows are short and sometimes condition-restricted. Retailer windows are usually the generous ones, and the retailer - not the brand - runs the process.
- Warranty and protection plans. The free warranty follows the ring; the paid plans are usually purchasable only at the brand's own checkout, in the same transaction.
- Payment. HSA and FSA routes run through the brand or a benefits partner, not through a general retailer.
Sizing decides where you can buy
This is the part people get wrong, and it is the most expensive mistake available here - a ring that does not fit reads badly and may not be returnable once worn. Brand sizes are not standard ring sizes, and they are not even consistent between generations of the same brand: RingConn states that Gen 3 sizes differ from other RingConn rings, standard rings and other brands. The full cross-brand comparison is on smart ring sizing compared, and the method is on our sizing guide.
The channels handle it in three different ways:
- Brand store, kit first. RingConn includes a complimentary sizing kit and ships the ring after you confirm your size (RingConn). Samsung does the same for the Galaxy Ring - “the Sizing Kit will be shipped first, before you confirm the size” (Samsung). Slower, and almost impossible to get wrong.
- Retailer, kit as a credit. Oura's own guidance is that “when you purchase a sizing kit from a retailer, you'll receive a credit towards a future Oura Ring purchase from that retailer” - a coupon code at Amazon, a digital or physical gift card at Best Buy, Costco and Target (Oura Member Care). You pay for the kit, then get it back against the ring.
- In person. Oura notes that “some retailers (examples: Best Buy, Target) allow you to try a sizing kit in person at a physical store”. If you are between sizes or have knuckles that argue with ring charts, this is the fastest honest answer available.
Buying from the brand
Brand stores are where the long-term cover lives. RingConn's Product Protection Plan - two or three years, covering accidental damage and normal wear and tear, neither of which the free warranty covers - “must be purchased together with a brand-new product directly from www.ringconn.com” at checkout (RingConn Support). Miss that moment and the option is gone. The full terms are on our RingConn warranty page.
The cost of buying direct is the return window. RingConn accepts returns “within 14 calendar days if you have a valid reason”, and only where the ring “has not been opened and used”, with the buyer paying return shipping (RingConn). Read literally, that is not a change-of-mind trial. Brand windows vary - Circular, for example, publishes 14-day returns on its own store listing - so check the policy page of the brand you are buying, not the brand you read about last week.
One more brand-store-only consideration: the Galaxy Ring needs a Samsung account registered on a Samsung Galaxy phone to start working at all (Samsung), so a cheap listing elsewhere does not make it a cheap ring for an iPhone owner. We go through those conditions on the Galaxy Ring fee question.
Buying on Amazon
Amazon is where most of these rings actually sell, and for a buyer who already knows their size it is usually the right answer: the listing price moves daily and is frequently the lowest live figure, the returns process is the most forgiving in the category, and you are not negotiating with a startup's support inbox if the box arrives empty.
What you give up is the brand's own extras. No sizing-kit-first flow, no extended protection plan where the brand restricts it to its own checkout, and no HSA or FSA route. One further caution specific to Oura: its warranty applies to products “purchased from the Oura online store or authorized retailers”, and secondhand purchases from unauthorized resellers are excluded (Oura). Amazon is named in Oura's own US retailer list (Oura Member Care), so the official listing is fine - a marketplace seller who is not Amazon.com is a different proposition. Check who the seller is before you click, not after.
Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Costco
Oura publishes the fullest retailer list of any brand we cover, naming Amazon, Best Buy, Costco, Sam's Club, Scheels, Target and Walmart in the US (Oura Member Care). The practical advantages are physical: a sizing kit you can try on the spot at Best Buy or Target, a ring you can carry home today, and a returns counter staffed by someone who is not an email address.
The thing to know is who owns the aftermath. Oura is explicit that “returns, exchanges, and refunds for Oura purchases from a retailer ... must be handled directly with the retailer”. That is good news when the retailer is generous and bad news when the window has closed, and it means the brand cannot rescue a late return for you.
The rings sold nowhere else
Two rings in our registry have no US retail route at all, which settles the where-to-buy question by eliminating it:
- Circular Ring 2 is sold through Circular's own store, with no Amazon.com listing we could find (Circular). It is also the only ring we cover that lists single-lead ECG, which is why people look for it - can a smart ring detect AFib has the detail and the caveats.
- Ultrahuman Ring AIR has no US route: Ultrahuman's US store lists only the Ring PRO (Ultrahuman), and the global store puts import responsibility on the buyer. We explain the legal background on Ultrahuman Ring PRO vs AIR.
The Ring PRO itself is the counter-example of how fast this changes: it is now listed on Amazon.com as well as Ultrahuman's US store, after a CBP ruling cleared the redesigned ring for import. Availability in this category is a moving target, which is why every buy button on this site resolves a live listing rather than a remembered one.
HSA and FSA money
If you plan to pay with a health account, the channel is decided for you. Oura publishes an HSA/FSA route on its own support site (Oura), RingConn routes eligibility through the benefits partner Flex (RingConn), and Ultrahuman publishes its own HSA/FSA page (Ultrahuman). None of that works at a general retailer checkout, and eligibility usually depends on a letter of medical necessity rather than on the device itself. The whole process, including what the IRS actually says, is on smart rings and HSA/FSA eligibility.
Refurbished and open-box
Refurbished rings are the one place where a cheaper listing costs you something concrete rather than nothing. Oura states that certified refurbished products - the example it gives is Best Buy - are “covered by a 90-day limited warranty” against one year on new products (Oura Member Care). On a sealed device whose battery is a consumable excluded from cover anyway, a 90-day term is thin.
Secondhand is worse again for most brands, with one exception worth noting: RingConn states that its warranty “applies to original owners and is transferable to further owners” (RingConn), where Oura excludes secondhand purchases from unauthorized resellers outright.
Can you buy a smart ring in a store today?
For Oura, yes - it names Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Costco, Sam's Club and Scheels as US retailers, and says some of them let you try a sizing kit in person. For the no-fee brands this site is built around, the honest answer is mostly no: RingConn, Ultrahuman and Circular are direct-and-Amazon propositions in the US, so “smart rings near me” tends to mean an Oura display.
That asymmetry is worth naming, because it is a quiet reason people end up on a membership ring they did not want. Being able to hold a ring in a shop is not evidence that it is the better ring - the comparison that matters is on best smart ring without a subscription.

The short version
- Unsure of your size: brand store, kit first - or Best Buy or Target if you want to try one today.
- Want the best odds on a return: Amazon, or a big-box retailer with a counter you can walk into.
- Want cover against dropping it: RingConn's own checkout, in the same transaction as the ring.
- Paying with HSA or FSA: the brand store or its benefits partner. No general retailer does this.
- Buying a Circular or an Ultrahuman AIR: there is no choice to make.
Whichever channel you pick, the price is the last thing to settle and the first thing to change. Our ranked picks are on best smart rings, and the cheaper end of the market is on best budget smart rings.
How we scored this
How these picks were chosen
Every pick here is labeled Researched: chosen from each brand's fee policy, spec sheet, sizing and warranty pages, and the published studies that measured the ring (or its predecessor) against a chest strap, an ECG or a sleep lab, then scored on a public rubric. Every figure links to where it came from, and maker performance numbers are labeled “maker's claim,” so you can see exactly what you're paying for before you buy.
Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.
