Oura Ring Stealth vs Silver: the same ring, two coatings, one costs more

The verdict

What actually differs

Three things, and only three: the color, the coating on top of the titanium, and the price tier. Oura sells six Ring 5 finishes - Silver, Black, Brushed Silver, Deep Rose, Gold and Stealth - and splits them across two prices, with Silver and Black at the base price and Brushed Silver, Deep Rose, Gold and Stealth a hundred dollars above it when we checked Oura's store (Oura store).

Everything else on the two rings is the same object. Oura's published figures for the Ring 5 are from 2 grams depending on size, 6.09 mm wide, 2.28 mm thick, waterproof to 100 m and IP68 rated, with a titanium exterior and a seamless titanium interior and a 6-9 day battery claim (Oura). Those numbers do not move with the finish.

The coatings, in Oura's words

Oura publishes what each finish is made of, and the wording is the most useful thing on this page (Oura Support: Oura Ring Finishes):

• Silver — a “glossy silver finish with a PVD coating.” PVD is physical vapor deposition, a thin hard layer bonded onto the titanium. Oura says Ring 5 finishes use “super hard physical vapor deposition (PVD) for improved scratch resistance.”
• Stealth — a “matte black finish with a super hard Diamond-Like-Carbon (DLC) coating.” DLC is the hardest surface treatment in Oura's range, and the only finish Oura describes with that term.
• Black — a “glossy black finish with a tungsten carbide PVD coating,” and worth knowing about because it is the other base-price finish. If you want black without the premium, this is the one to look at.

So on paper Stealth has the tougher surface. What Oura does not promise is that any finish will stay unmarked: its guidance is that scratches from wear are not covered by the warranty, and it suggests wearing the ring on your non-dominant hand and avoiding situations where the ring rubs against hard surfaces. The price gap, and what else it buys

Hardware prices change constantly and we do not print them; what we can say is the shape of Oura's pricing, because Oura publishes it: Stealth sits in the upper tier, a hundred dollars above Silver, for a ring that is otherwise identical.

If the fee is the part that bothers you rather than the color, the better comparison is not Stealth against Silver at all: it is Oura against a ring with no fee. Our Oura alternatives page and the membership cost breakdown both start there.

Living with each finish

• Visibility. Matte black reads as a piece of tech on most hands; silver reads as a plain band. Neither is objectively better, and if the point of buying a ring rather than a watch is that nobody notices it, that is a genuine argument for Silver.
• Marks and wear. Every metal ring picks up marks. The finish determines how those marks look rather than whether they appear, and Oura's own care advice is the same for all of them.
• Color over time. Oura's finishes page carries a specific note for the Ring 4 Stealth: “over time, the color may get darker with continuous use.” That note is attached to the finish, not to a fault, and it is the only ageing behavior Oura documents.
• Resale and replacement. If you replace the ring in a couple of years - and battery ageing means most people will - the premium is spent twice. Our battery lifespan page has what the makers say about how long that is.

If you're looking at a Ring 4

Both finishes exist on the older ring too, and Oura describes them the same way: Ring 4 Silver is a “glossy silver finish” with a PVD coating, Ring 4 Stealth a “matte black finish” with a Diamond-Like-Carbon coating. Oura also sells a Ring 4 Ceramic in Cloud and Midnight with a zirconia ceramic exterior, which is a genuinely different material rather than a different color.

The bigger Ring 4 decision is not the finish. It is size range and generation: Oura lists sizes 6-13 for Ring 5 and 4-15 for Ring 4, and the membership applies either way. Our Oura Ring 4 vs 5 page does that comparison properly.

The ring itself, either way

Whichever surface you pick, the cards below are what you are buying: one set of published specs per generation, every figure linked to the Oura page it came from, and one score each. Note what is not there - a separate card for Stealth and a separate card for Silver - because the finish is a surface on the same ring, which is the whole point of this page.

Who should buy which

• Buy Silver if you want the ring and not the jewelry decision. Base price, glossy PVD, identical data, and it reads as a plain band rather than a gadget.
• Buy Black if you want dark but not the premium. Oura's Black is a “glossy black finish with a tungsten carbide PVD coating” at the same base price as Silver.
• Buy Stealth if matte black is genuinely the look you want on your hand every day, and you accept that the premium buys a surface and Oura's hardest coating - not a feature, a metric or a longer battery.
• Buy neither if the membership is what is nagging at you. The finish premium is a one-off; the fee is not. The alternatives are ranked on exactly that.
