Why a ring suits a ward
Most wearables are badly suited to clinical work. A watch lights up, buzzes, needs charging every night and sits exactly where gloves and cuffs go. A ring is the opposite: no display, a few grams, and days between charges. Oura publishes the Ring 5 at 2.28 mm thick and from 2 grams; RingConn's Gen 3 is 2.3 mm at its thinnest. On a twelve-hour shift that difference is the whole product.
One thing to settle before you buy: your employer's hand-hygiene and jewellery policy. Many hospitals restrict what can be worn below the elbow, and some restrict rings specifically. That is a local rule, not a spec, so check it with your own trust or health system rather than taking any website's word - including ours.
How we ranked them
- Water rating. Handwashing dozens of times a shift, plus gel, plus the occasional splash. Every pick here is rated well past what a sink can do.
- Days per charge, plus a case. A block of four nights is the test. A ring with a charging case passes it without you thinking about it.
- No required fee. Shift workers are the people who most need the sleep data, and the people who should least be paying monthly to see it.
- Removal and skin. Fingers swell on long shifts. A ring you cannot get off is a problem, and skin under a ring that is never dry is a different problem.
Water, gel and gloves
The ratings are generous. RingConn lists the Gen 2 at IP68 and 100 m / 328 ft (RingConn), Oura puts the Ring 5 at 100 m and IP68 (Oura), and Ultrahuman lists 100 m for the Ring PRO (Ultrahuman). Handwashing is not a threat to any of them. What those ratings do not cover is chemistry: an IP rating is about water ingress, not repeated alcohol gel, chlorhexidine or hand sanitiser on a polymer and metal surface. Oura's own safety page notes the molding polymer “can handle short exposure to acetone” ( Oura Support), which is reassuring about solvents but not a statement about all-day sanitiser.
Practical answer: rinse and dry the ring and the finger under it at the end of a shift, and rotate it a quarter turn now and then. The full water-resistance picture, including saunas and pools, is on is a smart ring waterproof.
Published specs
Battery against a shift pattern
Think in blocks, not days. Four twelve-hour nights plus the broken sleep either side is roughly five days of continuous wear where you will not reliably remember a charger. RingConn claims 10-12 days for the Gen 2 and rates the included case at up to 150 days of top-ups; Ultrahuman claims up to 15 days and 45 with its case; Oura claims 6-9 days and ships no case at all. On a rotating roster that last one matters more than any sensor difference.
Charging case options, including third-party ones for rings that do not include one, are on chargers and charging cases, and every maker's claim with its fine print is on smart ring battery life.
Sleeping in daylight
This is the real reason a shift worker buys one of these. Night work scrambles sleep timing, and a ring is the only comfortable way to see what your actual sleep looks like when it happens at ten in the morning in three broken pieces. Two honest caveats. First, all the published validation of ring sleep staging was done on normal overnight sleep in normal conditions - the sleep-lab studies are summarised on sleep tracking accuracy - so daytime and fragmented sleep is outside what anyone has tested. Second, how each app handles naps and daytime sleep differs by brand, and it is worth checking in the app before you rely on it.
What the data is genuinely good for is the weekly shape: whether your total sleep across a block of nights is holding up, and whether your resting heart rate and HRV are drifting across a roster. That is a trend question, and trends are what these devices do well.
Skin, swelling and getting it off
Oura's product safety page is the most useful document any brand publishes here. On skin: “As with any ring or wearable device, some people may notice skin changes where the ring sits against the skin,” and if you see “redness, itching, flaking, or sensitivity under or around the ring” the instruction is to remove the ring and let the skin rest (Oura Support). On a job with permanently damp hands, that is worth reading twice - the longer version is on smart rings and sensitive skin.
On swelling, Ultrahuman is the only maker that publishes a design answer: its FAQ describes “ProRelease Technology” letting the ring be cut off more easily if a finger swells (Ultrahuman). Size for the swollen end of the day, not the start of it, and read our sizing guide before ordering.

What the specs support
- No subscription
- The charging case turns a 10-12 day ring into a months-between-outlets ring (maker's claim)
- A 2026 preprint compared it with a Polar H10 at rest: heart rate bias -0.42 bpm
- iOS and Android, free sizing kit
Where it falls short
- The chest-strap study is a preprint, seated only, and not peer-reviewed
- A reviewer found it read heart rate high during runs compared with a chest strap
- Needs iOS 17 or Android 10 or newer
- Sleep apnea figure is RingConn's own claim

Mistakes to avoid
- Buying before checking your workplace jewellery policy. Hand hygiene rules vary by employer and this is the one thing no spec sheet can answer for you.
- Choosing a ring with no charging case for a rotating roster. You will forget. The case is the feature.
- Sizing in the morning. Fingers at hour eleven of a shift are not fingers at hour one.
- Expecting a clinical alert. None of these devices is a medical device and none will tell you anything actionable about a patient or about you. Oura states that no Oura feature is FDA-cleared.
- Paying a membership out of a nursing wage to see your own sleep. Two of the three rings here charge nothing - see the no-subscription roundup.
How we scored this
How these picks were chosen
Every pick here is labeled Researched: chosen from each brand's fee policy, spec sheet, sizing and warranty pages, and the published studies that measured the ring (or its predecessor) against a chest strap, an ECG or a sleep lab, then scored on a public rubric. Every figure links to where it came from, and maker performance numbers are labeled “maker's claim,” so you can see exactly what you're paying for before you buy.
Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.
