What actually matters at 70
Every roundup in this category ranks rings on blood oxygen, HRV and readiness scores. For an older wearer those are the least decisive specifications on the page. What decides whether a ring is still being worn in six months is a much shorter list:
- Does it stop working if nobody pays? A ring with a required membership turns into a dead ornament the month the card declines. Two of the picks here charge nothing, ever.
- How often does somebody have to remember to charge it? A ring that needs a nightly dock is a ring that will be flat half the time. A charging case changes that completely.
- Will it go over the knuckle? Knuckles that are larger than the finger below them are the single most common reason a ring does not work out, and brand sizing does not match jewellery sizing.
- Does it work with the phone that is already in the house? One ring on this page refuses iPhones outright.
How we ranked them
We score every ring on the published rubric on our methodology page: cost of ownership over three years carries the most weight, then published evidence of accuracy, then battery, sizing, data ownership and platform support. For this page the order those weights produce is already close to the right answer, because the no-fee, long-battery, wide-size rings are exactly the ones an older wearer should be looking at.
The fee problem, in plain arithmetic
Oura's membership is $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year on Oura's own support page, and without it the app shows only three daily scores (Oura Support). RingConn, Samsung and Withings charge nothing for the core data. Over the years a ring actually gets worn, that is the biggest number on the page, and it is the only one we can compute rather than guess:
| Device | Required plan | Fees, 1 yr | Fees, 3 yrs | Fees, 5 yrs | Device price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| RingConn Gen 2 | No subscription | $0 | $0 | $0 | $299.00 |
| Samsung Galaxy Ring | No subscription | $0 | $0 | $0 | $229.99 |
| Oura Ring 5 | $5.99/month or $69.99/year | $69.99 | $209.97 | $349.95 | $399.00 |
| Withings Sleep | No subscription (optional extras) | $0 | $0 | $0 | $199.95 |
If the wearer is on a fixed income, that table is the whole argument. The deeper version is on smart ring cost over one, three and five years, and the HSA and FSA angle - which matters more for older buyers than anyone - is on is a smart ring HSA eligible.
Sizing, knuckles and swelling
Three things to know before anything is ordered. First, brand sizes are not jewellery sizes: Samsung says its sizes are “slightly different from that of regular rings” (Samsung), and RingConn says its Gen 3 sizes differ from its own other rings. Second, the free sizing kit is not optional - every brand here ships one, and RingConn and Samsung will not send the ring until a size is confirmed. Third, fingers change through the day and with the weather, so size for the swollen end of the range, not the morning.
Ultrahuman is the one brand that publishes a removal story for a finger that swells: its FAQ describes “ProRelease Technology” that lets the ring be cut off more easily (Ultrahuman). It is not a pick here because it charges the most and has no independent validation, but if a finger swells unpredictably it is worth knowing about. The full process is on our sizing guide, with the brand-by-brand differences on sizing compared, and the biggest and smallest available sizes on large and small sizes.

When a ring is the wrong answer
Arthritic joints, a finger that will not take a snug fit, hands in water all day, or simply no interest in wearing anything - all good reasons to put the money somewhere else. The Withings Sleep mat slides under the mattress on mains power, measures heart and respiratory rate through the mattress by ballistography, and reports snoring episodes and breathing disturbances with no required fee (Withings). Nothing to charge, nothing to size, nothing to lose down a plughole. The alternatives are ranked on best under-mattress sleep trackers.
What these rings will not do
- Fall detection. No ring here detects a fall or calls anyone. If that is the requirement, this is the wrong category - a watch or a dedicated alert pendant is the right one.
- Medical alerts. None of these is a medical device. Oura states no feature is FDA-cleared, and RingConn prints “not a medical device” next to its own insights.
- Medication reminders or GPS. Not a ring feature. A phone does this already.
- Blood pressure you can act on. Trends and signals, not a cuff reading - the detail is on can a smart ring measure blood pressure.

Mistakes to avoid
- Buying the ring as a gift without the sizing kit. The kit comes free and the ring will not fit without it. Order the kit, then the ring - or read the gift guide for the things that do work as a surprise.
- Signing someone up to a membership they will not notice paying. If the subscription lapses, an Oura drops to three daily scores. Decide that up front, not in year two.
- Choosing a ring with no charging case. The case is the difference between a device that is always on the hand and one that lives on a windowsill.
- Buying a Galaxy Ring for an iPhone household. It does not work with iOS, full stop.
- Expecting it to replace a doctor. It is a trend tool. Useful to bring to an appointment, useless as a substitute for one.
How we scored this
How these picks were chosen
Every pick here is labeled Researched: chosen from each brand's fee policy, spec sheet, sizing and warranty pages, and the published studies that measured the ring (or its predecessor) against a chest strap, an ECG or a sleep lab, then scored on a public rubric. Every figure links to where it came from, and maker performance numbers are labeled “maker's claim,” so you can see exactly what you're paying for before you buy.
Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.
